The hard part of flying to Japan for snow is rarely which down jacket to buy. It is where to go. Some people want to walk into a village buried in snow and photograph old houses that look like a storybook at night. Some only want a steaming bowl of miso ramen, then a giant snow sculpture a few steps from the door. Others have been holding onto Yamagata’s Zao, a whole slope of trees frozen into snow monsters, the juhyo.

All three places feel like winter, and the trips are not the same. The Shirakawa-go light-up has to be reserved early; the Sapporo Snow Festival fits a city trip you plan yourself; Zao’s juhyo are worth an extra night, so the ropeway and the weather have some room to move. With only 4 or 5 days off, it is usually more comfortable to stay in one region and go slowly than to keep riding across Japan just to collect all three.

What follows is based on official events already announced for winter 2026–2027: when each place is worth going, what to reserve, how to get there, what to wear, and how to stay online. You can compare them while you build a route, and you can avoid buying the flights first, then finding out the event only runs on set dates and you have missed it.

A good fit if youLike photography, old villages, and booking aheadAre on a first Hokkaido trip, traveling with kids, or chasing foodWant a natural oddity, an onsen, and a slower Tohoku trip

These three are not stops on one easy loop. Shirakawa-go sits in central Japan, Sapporo is in Hokkaido, and Zao is in Tohoku, in Yamagata. Doing all of them on one holiday takes a travel budget and time for a domestic flight or a shinkansen connection. If this is your first snow trip, start from the picture you most want to see.

1. Shirakawa-go: thatched houses in the snow, different by day and by night

The building Shirakawa-go, in Gifu, is known for is gassho-zukuri. The two sides of the roof rise into a steep triangle, like a pair of palms pressed together. The old houses were built for a climate with heavy snow: a thick thatched roof and a timber frame, kept through many generations. People still live in the village.

In winter, Ogimachi’s gassho settlement is snow, wooden houses, and the mountains beside the lane. Turn into a side alley and you may find long icicles hanging from the eaves. The village does not rely on one light-up to be worth the trip. Daylight shows the shape of the old houses, and it is the easier time to visit the historic homes that are open, eat Hida beef, or sit down with a hot cup of tea.

If the photo you want is the whole village of gassho houses glowing warm yellow at once, that is a limited night light-up. A regular daytime bus ticket is not light-up admission.

2027 Shirakawa-go light-up: dates, hours, and how to reserve

The Shirakawa-go Tourist Association has announced the 41st light-up, on four set evenings:

DateDayLight-up hours
January 11, 2027Monday (a Japanese national holiday)17:30–19:30
January 17, 2027Sunday17:30–19:30
January 24, 2027Sunday17:30–19:30
January 31, 2027Sunday17:30–19:30

The event is fully reserved, and there is more than one way in: a lottery for a stay inside the village, a reserved parking lot that is designated for the night, a light-up package on the route bus, or a tour from a travel agency. If you especially want the panorama from the Ogimachi Castle Ruins Observatory, check whether the plan in your hand includes observatory admission. Not every light-up ticket gets you up there.

Take the Nohi Bus packages that leave Takayama in 2027. One plan, without the observatory, is ¥13,000. Another, with observatory access, is ¥16,000. The two are different in what you get, when you meet, and how you buy, so the price alone does not decide it. The event buses are reserved online and paid by credit card, and they go on sale in batches by event date. The January 24, 2027 session opens at 14:00 on October 26, 2026 (10/26, Japan Time). The January 31 session is set to open on November 2 (11/2). For seats still left, check the live booking page.

If you plan to drive, the parking lots used for the night light-up also need a reservation. A daytime parking booking does not turn into admission for the night. The second round of self-drive spaces is scheduled to open at 13:00 on December 1, 2026 (12/1). Winter mountain roads ice over easily. If you have not driven in snow, the bus trips listed by the organizers, leaving from Takayama, are the easier way.

Getting to Shirakawa-go: is Takayama or Kanazawa the easier base?

The two bases people use most are Hida Takayama and Kanazawa. From the Nohi Bus Center in Takayama to Shirakawa-go, a typical bus is about 50 minutes. From Kanazawa the bus is about 75–85 minutes, and the road and the weather can stretch that. In busy winter slots, check which departures can still be reserved, then decide where to sleep the night before.

Stay in Takayama and the next day can include the Miyagawa Morning Market and the old Sanmachi streets. When the weather is clear, the old town looks good in snow. Stay in Kanazawa and you can fold in Kenrokuen Garden, Omicho Market, and a meal in town. On a 3-day, 2-night trip you can still see both, but do not pack the days solid. Hauling a suitcase between buses takes longer in winter than in summer.

For the night light-up, do not plan the way back from a regular daytime bus timetable. Nohi Bus says plainly that after the light-up ends, no regular route bus returns to central Takayama. You need the transport arranged for the light-up, or some other plan that is already approved. Before you pay, confirm the ride out, the ride back, the meeting point, and the observatory ticket together.

How to photograph the gassho village, and what is worth the time

On a first visit, walk the settlement in daylight first. You can see the roofs, the wooden windows, and the piled snow up close, and you can step into the traditional houses that are open. The night light-up is for the lamps coming on through the village. If your ticket includes the observatory, the set route up there shows a wider view of the settlement.

The prettiest frame is not always a fully black sky. Around sunset there is still some blue overhead, and the house lights are already on, so the picture has layers. The light-up itself lasts only 2 hours, so the ride, the line, and the photos all have to share that window. Please stay out of people’s homes, the fields, and anywhere marked off.

If the light-up tickets are gone, daytime Shirakawa-go is still worth planning. Snowfall changes from year to year, and a day without the light-up is not a day without a winter village.

2. Sapporo Snow Festival: Hokkaido’s big snow, without a special trip up a mountain

If you still want department stores, restaurants, and the subway in winter, and you also want a good snow scene every day you are there, Sapporo is an easy place to start. A few steps out of a subway station and there is a large snow sculpture. After soup curry at night, you can walk Odori Park under the lights. For a first independent trip to Hokkaido, having the trains and daily life in one city saves a lot of fuss.

The Sapporo Snow Festival began in 1950, when students built a few snow figures in Odori Park. It grew into one of Japan’s well-known winter events. The themes change each year: a historic building, a cultural subject, or a large original sculpture. Older photos are useful for the mood. They are not a list of what will stand there in 2027.

When is the 2027 Sapporo Snow Festival, and what are the three venues?

Organizers have confirmed the 77th Sapporo Snow Festival for February 4, 2027 (Thursday) through February 11, 2027 (Thursday, a Japanese national holiday). There are three main venues:

VenueWhat you go to seeHow to plan it
Odori ParkLarge and mid-size snow sculptures, with some lighting at nightWalk one stretch by day and another after dark, for two different moods
SusukinoIce sculptures and the nightlife districtEasiest as a walk after dinner
TSUDOMESnow play, slides, and indoor and outdoor activitiesHalf a day with kids; check what is actually open that year

The Odori Park stretch runs from West 1-chome to West 11-chome, about 1 km. The snow sculptures are usually lit at night. Official 2027 visitor information lists illumination at the Odori venue after dark until 22:00. Projection mapping, sculpture themes, particular stalls, and the program can all change from year to year. Once you are there, use that year’s official venue map and pick the blocks you want.

Each venue has its own character, so there is no need to finish all three inside 2 short hours. Families can put snow play at TSUDOME in the daytime. If you like night photos and a walk after dinner, Susukino fits the evening.

Event pages: Official Sapporo Snow Festival site|Sapporo Tourism Association, 2027 event guide.

From New Chitose Airport to the Sapporo Snow Festival, the ride is straightforward

From New Chitose Airport, the JR Rapid Airport train to Sapporo Station takes about 37–43 minutes, depending on the train, and some special rapid services are faster. From Sapporo Station, change to the subway for Odori Station. The Snow Festival’s Odori Park venue is just outside the exits. If you want to drop bags or check in first, Sapporo Station, Odori, and Susukino are all workable areas to stay.

Odori and Susukino are not far apart. When the air is mild and the ground is not slick, you can walk it slowly. During the festival the crowds pack the snow into hard ice. When the snow gets heavier at night, the subway is safer than insisting on walking. Organizers also suggest traction for your soles. Some stations and spots around the venues may sell it.

Around the city you can add the grounds of the Former Hokkaido Government Office, the Otaru Canal, the Sapporo Beer Museum, or Shiroi Koibito Park, and still keep the festival as the main event. It is easy to stop in Odori Park for one sculpture longer than you meant, and reach the next corner later than you expected.

Photo: Ominae/Wikimedia Commons/CC BY-SA 4.0. A Sapporo Snow Festival stall in February 2016 (the sign reads the 67th). Atmosphere only: not the 2027 venue, and the prices on the stall are not this year’s.

How to spend a day at the Sapporo Snow Festival, and what to eat when you are cold

A comfortable version of the day: breakfast in Sapporo, then the snow sculptures along Odori Park late morning or in the afternoon, with a café when you get cold. In the evening, eat ramen, soup curry, or jingisukan grilled lamb in Susukino, then look at the ice sculptures. You still see the snow, without standing outside in the cold for the whole day.

Hokkaido in winter has a long list of things worth eating: hot miso ramen, a rich soup curry, a seafood rice bowl, grilled scallops, and crab. Do not treat any past year’s stalls or food market as something that will definitely be back. If you are making the trip for one vendor, check that year’s stall list before you go.

For photos, find the angle you like on a large sculpture in daylight, then come back at night for the lit version. For a portrait, drop the exposure on your phone or camera a little so the snow does not blow out to a flat white. When the festival is crowded, walk in the direction marked out, and do not stop suddenly in the middle of a narrow path to take a picture.

3. Zao snow monsters: a ropeway into the juhyo, then a night in the Yamagata onsen town

Zao’s juhyo differ from the other two places because the view comes from the mountain itself. In winter, cold wind drives supercooled droplets onto the conifers. The droplets freeze when they touch the branches, and snow and ice build up in layers until the trees become huge, strange snow monsters. On a clear day, looking down from the ropeway, the slope looks occupied by a crowd of white sculptures, nothing like a snow figure carved in the city.

You do not have to ski to see them. From Zao Onsen, ride the Zao Ropeway up to Juhyo Kogen Station, then continue toward Jizo Sancho Station for the high-elevation snow. The summit and the onsen street can be very different. Sun in the town below does not mean the top is free of strong wind or thick fog.

Photo: Toto-artist/Wikimedia Commons/CC BY-SA 3.0. Zao juhyo in 2008, not the 2027 season.

Which month looks best for Zao juhyo, and how do day and night compare?

Juhyo need cold, wind, and moisture, and they grow slowly. Through November and December (months 11 and 12) they are often still filling out. By January they usually have more size, and February is usually the month most worth aiming for. If seeing the full, huge snow monsters matters to you, aim first for late January through February, and keep 1 spare day.

Daytime is better for the shape of the ice, the monsters themselves, and the mountains behind them. At night, light on the white juhyo looks more unreal. If you want the night view, confirm a designated date before you go. Do not arrive in Yamagata and only then find out that evening has no light-up.

From what has been published for the 2026–2027 snow season, the Zao juhyo night light-up runs on 31 designated days between December 26, 2026 (12/26) and February 23, 2027, from 17:00–21:00, with the last ride up from the base station around 19:45. A round-trip adult night ropeway ticket is listed around ¥4,600, and a child around ¥2,300. Watching the light-up from the regular ropeway and the separately sold snow-vehicle ride, the Juhyo Illusion Corridor, are different experiences. The snow vehicle has its own reservation limits and its own fare.

Strong wind, heavy snow, or poor visibility on the mountain can stop the ropeway or cancel the event. That is why Zao suits an overnight stay more than central Sapporo does. Do not put the only viewing chance of the whole trip on a single ropeway departure.

Event pages: Zao Ropeway juhyo and night light-up|Zao snow-vehicle Juhyo Illusion Corridor.

Getting to the Zao juhyo: how Tokyo and Sendai connect to Yamagata

From Tokyo, take the Yamagata Shinkansen to Yamagata Station, then a Yamako Bus to Zao Onsen. The bus is usually about 40 minutes. The stop in front of Yamagata Station and the winter timetable are on the Yamako Bus site before you travel. From Sendai, one way is to reach Yamagata first and change there, which fits a Tohoku trip.

After the Zao Onsen bus terminal, you still walk, or use a hotel shuttle, to the Zao Ropeway base station. Pulling luggage along a snowy road in winter is awkward. If you are staying at an onsen inn, ask about the shuttle and bag storage first. It removes a lot of the hassle.

Zao has another reason to stay: the baths. After the white monsters on the mountain, you walk back into hot water in the onsen street, and it may be snowing outside the window. That is a very Tohoku winter. Yamagata’s imoni stew, soba, and other local dishes fit dinner well. If someone in the group wants to ski, look up the Zao Onsen ski area separately. This piece stays with people who are here for the view.

For other winter scenes in Tohoku, JEKO also has a guide to Zao juhyo and the Oirase icefalls.

How many days for the three places? A pace that is not a rush

For winter Japan, the approach that works best is to pick one region, then add a nearby city. The paces below suit a trip you plan yourself. You do not have to catch an early bus every morning.

Route A|Shirakawa-go and Hida Takayama, 3 days and 2 nights

Day 1, arrive in Takayama and stay near the station or the old streets. In the evening, walk Sanmachi and eat Hida beef. Day 2, take a reserved bus from Takayama to Shirakawa-go, walk in the daytime, and visit traditional houses. If you have a night light-up reservation, return to Takayama on the transport set up for that event. If you do not, come back on the regular bus times. Day 3, the Miyagawa Morning Market or Takayama Jinya, then on to Nagoya, Kanazawa, or the next place.

This route fits people who are making the trip for the gassho houses. It can also extend an earlier JEKO guide to Nabana no Sato and Hida Takayama in winter. Do not add the two itineraries together and then squeeze every stop into the same day.

Route B|Sapporo Snow Festival and Otaru, 4 days and 3 nights

Day 1, New Chitose Airport into Sapporo, and dinner in the city. Day 2, the Snow Festival in Odori Park, coffee in the afternoon, then Susukino’s ice sculptures and night streets. Day 3, go to Otaru, walk the canal, and browse Sakaimachi Street and the glass shops. If the town has a night event in that same winter window, decide whether a late return is worth it. Day 4, a Hokkaido breakfast and souvenirs before the airport.

With kids, you can swap Otaru for half a day of snow play at TSUDOME. Sapporo’s advantage is the number of restaurants, trains, and hotels. You can have a full trip without learning to drive in snow.

Route C|Yamagata, Zao, and an onsen, 3 days and 2 nights

Day 1, arrive in Yamagata, go on to Zao Onsen in the afternoon, and check into the inn. Day 2, pick the better window for the Zao Ropeway once you see the weather. If the daytime view is clear, see the juhyo first. If you already hold a designated light-up evening, rest at the inn and go back out later. Day 3, return to central Yamagata, walk near the station or eat something local, then continue to Sendai or Tokyo.

The point of this route is not to rush. Thick fog on the summit can make morning and afternoon look very different, and a room for the night is what gives you room to shift. If you want extra ski days, see JEKO’s comparison of five major ski areas in Japan.

What to wear for a snow trip in Japan, plus phone and luggage

For snow in Japan, warm clothes matter, and shoes matter more. Sidewalks in Sapporo, the lanes in Shirakawa-go, and the ground beside the Zao ropeway station can all freeze after people walk on them. Ordinary sneakers slip on smooth ice. Waterproof shoes with grip, or a traction add-on that actually fits, usually do more than one extra thick layer.

A useful stack is a sweat-wicking base, a warm middle layer, and a windproof, waterproof shell, so you can peel it off in a restaurant or on a train. A hat, a neck gaiter, and gloves help too, especially on the Zao summit, where bare ears and fingers get cold fast. If you will be photographing in the snow, touchscreen gloves and warm socks save a lot of fumbling.

Phones have their own winter problem. Cold cuts the charge you can actually use for a while, and a long stretch of navigation, video, or sending photos can drain what is left faster than usual. Keep the phone in an inner pocket, close to your body, and do not leave it out in the freeze all evening. Do not remember the power bank only when you are already at the summit. Carrying a power bank on a flight has to follow the airline and airport rules.

One habit that saves time: before you leave the room, save the bus confirmation, the event QR code, the hotel address, and an offline map. In the mountains, in heavy snow, or during a large event, the connection is sometimes less smooth than downtown. If the important bits are available offline, the day feels much easier.

Which eSIM for snow in Japan? Data for Shirakawa-go, Sapporo, and Zao

A snow trip uses more data than it looks. At Shirakawa-go you are opening reservation mail, shuttle times, and the ride back. At the Sapporo Snow Festival you are navigating, checking restaurants, and messaging the people you are with. At Zao you are checking ropeway notices, the weather, and the return bus. After a big snow photo, you can post an IG Story without hunting for hotel Wi-Fi the whole time.

If you would rather not swap out the physical SIM you already use in Taiwan, an eSIM fits this trip. Install it before you leave, somewhere the connection is stable. In Japan, switch mobile data to the travel eSIM, and keep the original number for calls or verification texts if you still need them. Which line carries the data, and whether roaming is on, should follow the notes on the plan you bought, so the main number does not pick up roaming charges you were not expecting.

JEKO’s Japan eSIMs come in different data sizes and on different networks:

  • au/KDDI Japan local plan: for travelers who want a Japan local IP, who will be in cities and along transport routes, and who also want Japanese apps to behave as they do locally. The JEKO product pages list different high-speed amounts and unlimited options. Some longer plans need the APN set by hand, so read that when you buy.
  • KDDI/SoftBank dual-network roaming plan: for moving across Shirakawa-go, Takayama, Sapporo, and Tohoku, when you want the phone to use whichever of the networks is actually usable. These JEKO plans may use a Singapore IP. Confirm the option you select. “Can use the KDDI network” is not the same thing as “a Japan local IP.”
  • Daily data plans: if you are mostly on maps, photos, and messages, pick from the daily high-speed amounts. Uploading a lot of video, video calls, or hotspot sharing needs a larger high-speed allowance.

No carrier can promise that the Zao summit, every valley around Shirakawa-go, or every crowded corner of the Sapporo Snow Festival will hit top 5G speed. The spot itself, the weather that hour, buildings in the way, the phone’s bands, and how busy the tower is all change the connection. Choose a plan by the actual network, the data rules, and where you will use it, not by the words “5G” or “unlimited” alone.

To compare the specs first, see the JEKO Japan eSIM plans. For a Japan local network, see the JEKO au/KDDI high-speed unlimited plan. Install it before you go, and confirm the phone supports eSIM. Once the trip starts, the time can go to the snow and the food.

Japan winter trip FAQ

Can I visit Shirakawa-go in the daytime if I do not have a night light-up reservation?

Yes. You can plan an ordinary daytime visit, see the gassho settlement, and use the facilities that are open, following that day’s transport, parking, and opening rules. The four light-up evenings in January 2027 are fully reserved. Without the right ticket, a daytime visitor cannot stay on and join the night event.

Does every Shirakawa-go light-up ticket include the observatory?

No. The observatory is controlled. A stay inside the village, or some bus packages, may include that access, and a regular parking space or another light-up plan may not. Read the ticket type when you buy. Someone else’s night photo does not mean every ticket gets up there.

When does the 2027 Sapporo Snow Festival start, and do I need a ticket?

The dates are February 4–11, 2027. Looking at snow and ice sculptures in the outdoor areas of Odori Park and Susukino does not require a general admission ticket. If a particular activity or paid experience has its own fee, follow what the organizers publish.

Which area is a good base for the Sapporo Snow Festival?

On a first visit, look first at Sapporo Station, Odori Station, and Susukino. If you want the airport JR train and an easy time with luggage, around Sapporo Station is practical. If you want to walk the festival at night, Odori or Susukino sits on the way. When you pick a hotel, count the distance you will drag bags over snow.

When are the huge Zao snow monsters most likely?

Late January through February is usually the window worth aiming for, and February often has more size, though how they form changes each year. If the plan includes a night at Zao, strong wind or cloud is easier to work around.

Is the Zao juhyo night light-up on every day?

No. For the 2026–2027 snow season it is set for 31 designated days between December 26, 2026 (12/26) and February 23, 2027. Night ropeway hours, fares, and whether service is suspended all need another look at the official notice before you go. The snow-vehicle tour is a separate reservation.

Can all three places fit into 5 days and 4 nights in Japan?

It is hard to recommend. The three sit in central Japan, Hokkaido, and Tohoku, and crossing those regions takes a lot of time and money. On 5 days and 4 nights, one region plus what is nearby is usually more comfortable than spending most of the holiday on transfers, airports, and moving bags.

Do I have to buy an unlimited eSIM for snow in Japan?

Not necessarily. If you are mainly on maps, messages, and transport lookups, a daily plan or a total-data plan can fit. Uploading a lot of high-resolution video, going live, or sharing a hotspot is when the high-speed allowance, or an unlimited option, matters more. Whichever plan you pick, check the networks it uses in Japan and what happens after the data allowance runs out.

Leave the time for the winter you actually came to see

The old houses at Shirakawa-go, the snow sculptures in Sapporo, the huge juhyo at Zao: all three are worth seeing, and they do not have to be collected on one trip. If you want the gassho village at night, put the light-up reservation first on the list. On a first trip to Hokkaido, let the Sapporo Snow Festival introduce the northern winter. If you want the scale that only the mountain makes, stay an extra night at Zao and leave the weather on the summit some room.

Once the flights, the rides, and the rooms are set, save the phone’s data plan, the reservation mail, and the offline files together. When you are actually in the snow, walk slowly, photograph slowly, and take the Japan that only winter has.
