How to Choose a Japan or Korea Student eSIM: Language School, Exchange Arrival Data, Residence Card, and ARC

Studying or on exchange in Japan or Korea, and unsure about internet for the first month? How the residence card, the ARC, and prepaid SIMs differ, how to keep a Taiwan number for OTP codes, how to set up dual SIM, and how a JEKO long-stay student eSIM can cover the gap.

A language-school term in Japan, or one exchange semester in Korea, usually starts with the flight, the dorm, and the school paperwork already sorted. Mobile data is the piece that slips to the end. Then the plane lands, and looking up the route to the dorm, writing to the school, downloading check-in files, or even calling a car to the address all need a connection that works right away.

Students do not use the network the way a short holiday does. Maps and social apps can be enough while you are only visiting. Once daily life starts, a phone number, bank checks, messages about a rental, and the school’s admin system show up as separate problems. That is why it helps to split two jobs before you fly: how you will stay online for the first few weeks, and when you actually need a real Japanese or Korean phone number.

If the new address is in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Seoul, or Busan, this guide walks through the entry document, the first data plan, and a dual-SIM setup that keeps a Taiwan number able to receive OTP codes.

Studying in Japan or Korea: how do you choose the first data plan?

Both countries have plenty of phone plans, and the gap is not only the price. What matters on day one is whether you already hold a local ID, whether a passport is enough to apply, and whether you need a phone number at all.

A short language course of about one month may be covered by a 30-day data plan. An exchange semester, or a stay of a year or more, is usually more flexible if you bridge the first weeks with a travel eSIM and pick a long-term carrier only after the paperwork has settled.

Japan: a residence card can be issued as soon as you land

Search “open a phone plan as a student in Japan” and you will see the residence card, an address, or a Japanese bank account listed as requirements, which makes it sound as if everyone must wait several weeks. When the residence card is issued actually depends on your status at entry and the airport.

At Narita, Haneda, Kansai, and other airports, you may receive the residence card on the spot

Japan’s Immigration Services Agency says that a person with a qualifying mid- to long-term status who enters through Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Chubu, New Chitose, or another designated airport is usually handed the residence card after immigration inspection. If you enter through another port that does not issue the card on site, you may receive it by mail only after you register your address with the municipality where you live.

Holding the card does not mean every phone plan can be opened that same day. A carrier may still check the details on the card, the spelling of your name, how you will pay, and your address. Some online applications also limit which version of the document they accept. The practical step is to ask the school for its “checklist of admin tasks after entry,” so address registration and the carrier application are scheduled on purpose.

Once the place you will live is decided, register that address under the rules that apply to you. Official study-in-Japan guidance reminds mid- to long-term residents to register with the municipality within the prescribed 14 days after the address is fixed. For a first rental, or a move into a student dorm, the school’s international office can tell you which papers to bring.

Exchange students and language schools do not always need the same plan

A short language-school stay looks a lot like a long visit: class on weekdays, the city on weekends, and a daily LINE call home. If the phone supports eSIM, buying a data plan that covers the length of the stay saves the hunt for a counter on the day you land.

A six-month or one-year exchange is a different list of needs. Google Maps, LINE, and the class platform are only part of it. Shops, part-time job applications, and rental contacts sometimes send notices to a Japanese phone number. Even when a travel eSIM is fast, a data-only plan still has no Japanese phone number, and it cannot stand in for a local number that needs ordinary SMS.

Docomo, au/KDDI, SoftBank, the various budget SIMs, UQ mobile, and Y!mobile do not all ask for the same documents or use the same signup path. Some people apply in a shop with their ID. Others activate online. If you do not yet have a local way to pay, check whether the shop takes the credit card you already have before you rush into a long contract.

How much data should a Japan eSIM include?

The first days are busy: moving from the airport, finding the dorm, looking up the school, and using a translation app. The heavier use usually comes later, from video calls home, streaming, sharing a hotspot with a laptop, and backing up a cloud photo album.

If campus or the dorm has Wi-Fi most of the time, 1GB–2GB of high-speed data a day is a reasonable first estimate. Frequent video calls, watching shows on the train, or tethering a laptop points toward a larger total or an unlimited plan. Read the label carefully. Some “unlimited” plans slow down after the high-speed allowance and return to full speed the next day. Others stay at one fixed speed with no cap. They do not feel the same.

JEKO’s Japan study / long-stay eSIM lists several options. The KDDI/SoftBank dual-network daily plan on that page is a data-only roaming plan that uses a Singapore IP, and it supports hotspot sharing. After each day’s high-speed allowance is used up, the speed drops and resets the next day. If you need a Japan IP, a specific local streaming service, or a Japanese phone number, look at a different plan that actually meets those conditions. “It connects to KDDI” is not enough to decide.

Korea: you can have data and a prepaid number before the ARC

Exchange students in Korea often hear that a phone plan is impossible until the ARC arrives. That sentence is partly right, and it does not cover every case.

The Korean government’s Study in Korea site states it plainly: postpaid monthly plans usually require an Alien Registration Card (ARC), while a prepaid phone plan may be opened with a passport. A student who has just landed in Seoul or Busan, and does not have an ARC yet, can start with a data eSIM. If you urgently need an ordinary Korean phone number, ask a prepaid counter that accepts passport applications.

The ARC is not “you will definitely have the card four weeks after entry”

A foreigner who plans to stay in Korea for more than 90 days generally needs to file the alien registration application within 90 days of entry. That is an application deadline. It is not a promise that the card will be issued on day 90, and it is not a fixed wait of 2–4 weeks for every student. How long the card actually takes depends on appointments at the local immigration office, whether the papers are complete, and how busy that office is.

Most schools explain the process after the term starts, and some help with a group application. If the school asks you to prepare a passport, photos, a certificate of enrollment, and housing details, get those ready early. After registration is done and you have the card, monthly Korean plans and budget carriers (알뜰폰) for a semester or a full year are usually easier to compare.

A Korean phone number and “this can pass an identity check” are two different things

Everyday apps, ticket sites, banks, and membership services in Korea sometimes ask for a Korean phone number, and sometimes go further and ask for phone verification in your own name. A number that starts with 010 on the screen does not mean it will pass every site’s phone identity check.

Some short-term numbers sold to visitors can receive ordinary texts and still fail a bank check, PASS verification, or a particular membership signup, because of how the line is registered, how identity is checked, or what the service itself allows. If you expect to stay in Korea for a long time, separate “I only need data” from “I need Korean identity verification in my own name.”

When a school process asks for a local number, ask the international office which kind of number it accepts before you pay for a SIM that does not fit. For daily chats with classmates and family on KakaoTalk or LINE, an account that already works, plus a working data connection, is usually enough. There is no rush to move the account onto a new phone number.

Korea eSIM: native, roaming, and hotspot rules are in the details

JEKO’s Korea study / long-stay eSIM also comes in more than one carrier and data size. The LG U+ / SK Telecom dual-network total plan on the page is Singapore IP roaming, data only, continues at about 128 kbps after the high-speed allowance, and does support hotspot. There is a separate SKT native option marked as a Korea local IP. Hotspot on that option follows that product’s own conditions. On some products, voice or SMS opens only after the specified eKYC is finished.

Those features do not transfer from one listing to another. If you will take a tablet or laptop to class, confirm that the version you selected allows hotspot sharing. If you want a Korean number for SMS, check which SKU it is, whether verification has to be done after you are connected in Korea, and whether the provider supports the kind of check you need.

A stay of 20–30 days that is mostly social apps and maps on campus is often fine on a data-only plan. Banking, an internship, rental contacts, or long-term identity checks are a better match for a proper local number later.

Should you keep your Taiwan number? Dual SIM so OTP codes are not missed

One of the best reasons to keep a Taiwan number during a stay in Japan or Korea is bank card OTP codes, logins for accounts you already have, and calls or texts to family in Taiwan. After that number is switched off, some sites ask you to verify again, and account recovery can get involved. Checking the number’s validity, international roaming, and SMS rules with your original carrier before you leave is much simpler than sorting it out after you land.

A common split is: keep voice and SMS on the Taiwan primary line, and let the JEKO eSIM handle local mobile data. You do not have to remove the Taiwan SIM to use an eSIM, as long as the phone can run both of the SIMs you are using at the same time and the carrier lock is already off.

How do you set up dual SIM on iPhone?

  1. On Wi-Fi, open Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM, and install the Japan or Korea plan with the QR code from the purchase email.
  2. Name the new line “Japan data” or “Korea data,” so it stays distinct from the Taiwan primary line.
  3. After you arrive, go to Cellular → Cellular Data and select the JEKO eSIM. Leave the Taiwan line turned on so it can receive texts that meet the roaming conditions.
  4. If you do not want the phone to fall back to the Taiwan line and run up an expensive data-roaming bill, turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching, and check the data-roaming setting on the Taiwan line.
  5. Turn on data roaming for the JEKO travel eSIM as the product instructions say, then test the browser, maps, and messages.

Apple also notes that an iPhone uses only one cellular-data network at a time. How voice and data pair on dual SIM depends on the model, the carrier, and the system version. Not every iPhone has the same SIM layout. Confirm the eSIM combinations your phone supports before you leave.

How do you set up Samsung, Pixel, and other Android phones?

On Samsung, the usual path is Settings → Connections → SIM manager. On Pixel, it is often Settings → Network & internet → SIMs. After the eSIM is added, set the default data line to the Japan or Korea eSIM, and leave voice or SMS preferred on the Taiwan line. Menu names differ a little by brand and software version.

If the original Taiwan number is also an eSIM, confirm first that the phone can keep two eSIM profiles active at the same time. Some newer Pixel models can run two profiles together, and that still depends on the model and the carrier. Before you install, match your phone model, the form of your original number, and the rules of the JEKO plan.

Can Wi-Fi calling replace international roaming?

Wi-Fi calling can be a backup, but whether it works overseas, whether it costs extra, and whether it can receive a particular text all depend on your original Taiwan carrier. It is not “any Wi-Fi network guarantees every OTP.” A bank may also switch to app push approval, or limit certain logins from abroad. Before the trip, test the bank app, two-factor sign-in, and a backup login once.

The first month of study: what order keeps you online?

7 days before departure: finish the settings that matter

Confirm the school’s start date and the dorm move-in time, and download the admission notice, transit directions, and the school’s contact details. Once you have chosen an eSIM for the right number of days, you can install it on reliable Wi-Fi. When the validity clock starts still follows the plan you bought. Some plans start at the first connection, so do not treat every product as the same rule.

This is also a good time to download Japan’s Norikae Annai or NAVITIME, and Korea’s Naver Map / KakaoMap, and to sign in to LINE, KakaoTalk, email, and your bank app while you are still in Taiwan. Do not leave the only verification method to be switched on for the first time after you are abroad.

The day you land: maps and a way to reach people come first

At the airport, activate the eSIM from the email and switch cellular data to the new plan. Test a map search and a web page before you head to the dorm. If nothing loads, check that the correct line is on, whether data roaming is required, and whether the APN was filled in by the plan. Once that works, deal with transfers, picking up keys, and school check-in.

Save the dorm address on the phone in Japanese or Korean, and keep an offline screenshot as well. A dead battery just after landing, weak signal on an underground metro stretch, or a shuttle that is hard to find are exactly when that small backup helps.

Week 1: school check-in, address, and papers

Students in Japan complete the registration that matches their status and address. Long-stay students in Korea watch for the school’s ARC application notice and how to book the appointment. After that paperwork, ask classmates and carrier shops near campus which plan can actually receive local SMS, which documents the signup needs, and whether cancellation has a penalty.

Stable dorm Wi-Fi can mean you use less mobile data than you expected. Living off campus, with a long commute every day, can push the opposite way. There is no need to sign a one-year contract on day one. Watch your own usage and signal for a week, and the choice is usually clearer.

Weeks 2 to 4: keep the eSIM, or move to a local number

If a short course has only a few weeks left, renewing a data plan that matches the remaining days and your usage is the simple path. Long-stay students should start weighing a local phone number, banking, membership services, and contact with the school. After the local number is active, you can still keep the Taiwan line for important messages if the phone supports it, or leave the old travel eSIM as a short backup. For any plan you are no longer using, turn off auto-renewal or check the expiry so it does not keep running.

JEKO Japan and Korea student eSIMs: how do you match one to what you need?

JEKO lets you pick the days and the data online, then receive the install details, so the first day in an unfamiliar city is not spent signing a carrier contract. For an exchange student on a first trip abroad, or a language-school student who does not have the dorm key yet, having data to reach the school and check transit is a practical convenience.

For Japan, open the JEKO Japan long-stay student eSIM and compare daily, total, and other options that are available. For Korea, see the JEKO Korea long-stay student eSIM, and check native versus roaming, whether sharing is supported, and whether ordinary SMS and number verification are included. IP, allowance, speed, and limits are not the same on every plan. The product page of the option you select is the one to read before you pay.

If the study plan runs for half a year or longer, treat the eSIM as one way to stay online during the transition, rather than assuming that buying several short plans in a row is always the cheapest path. Compare local prepaid and monthly prices, what identity checks you need, and carrier coverage, then decide which setup fits the longer stay.

Japan and Korea student eSIM FAQ

Do I need a Japanese residence card before I can use an eSIM?

No. An ordinary data-only travel eSIM and a local monthly Japanese number are different services. If your device and the plan support it, the travel eSIM can be turned on under that product’s rules. Documents are required when you apply for a local carrier number, and those rules come from the carrier.

Without an ARC in Korea, can I buy a SIM that has a Korean phone number?

Some prepaid plans accept a passport, so it is not impossible to apply. Whether that line can receive ordinary SMS, turn on voice, or pass an identity check still has to be confirmed separately.

Can a JEKO Japan or Korea eSIM receive local bank verification codes?

Most data-only plans have no local number. Even if some Korea plans can receive ordinary texts after eKYC, that does not mean a bank or every membership site will accept them. For a formal identity check in your own name, choose a local number that meets the institution’s rules.

If I keep my original Taiwan number, will I always receive bank OTP codes?

It depends on whether the number is still active, whether your original carrier supports overseas roaming and SMS, and how the bank verifies you. Confirm the carrier plan, avoid setting the Taiwan line as your overseas mobile data, and prepare another verification method inside the bank app.

Can one eSIM last for half a year?

Not necessarily. Each product has its own number of days, allowance, and expiry rule. Long-stay students should compare the real validity, whether it can be extended, and what a local number would cost. Buying short plans over and over is not a plan you should treat as automatic.

The language-school dorm has Wi-Fi. Do I still need mobile data?

Commuting, looking for housing, a trip to a clinic, time outdoors, and last-minute contact still use it. If your daily use is light, start with a smaller allowance and adjust once you know your own routine.

Can every Japan and Korea eSIM share a hotspot with a laptop?

No. Some Japan plans support sharing, while some Korea total or roaming options do not. Read the hotspot field on the product you selected, not only the name of the series.

If I start with a travel eSIM and later switch to a local monthly plan, will that affect LINE or KakaoTalk?

In most cases, changing the data connection by itself does not erase the account you already have. Changing the phone number tied to the account, signing in again, or moving to another phone can ask for verification. Back up chats and check the linked details before you change numbers.

Before you fly, prepare data and a phone number as two separate jobs

For the first days of study in Japan or Korea, having data makes a lot of small tasks easier: you can answer a school notice right away, change trains without hunting for free Wi-Fi, and find the dorm in a city you do not know yet. Once the neighborhood, the papers, and the bank steps feel familiar, choose a local number that fits a longer stay.

Checking phone support, roaming reception on your Taiwan number, and how much data the first weeks need, before you leave, is calmer than comparing carriers in a rush after you land. For Japan, see the JEKO Japan student eSIM. For Korea, compare the JEKO Korea student eSIM. With the connection ready, the energy after arrival can go to the new life that actually matters.
