In Vietnam’s three big cities, almost every independent traveler has Grab on their phone. You can book a car—and sometimes a motorbike—see a fare estimate up front, and avoid haggling at the curb.
It is widely used in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Da Nang. This guide covers registration, location, payment, plate matching, and the airport pickup mistakes people make most often. Sightseeing days (for example Da Nang to Ba Na Hills) also often use Grab or a shuttle for the last mile.

Setup before you fly
- Download Grab from the official App Store / Play Store
- Register with your mobile number and allow location
- You can try linking a card; if it fails, cash in Vietnam is fine
- Confirm you will have data after landing—without it you cannot request a ride
How to book a ride
- Choose car or motorbike (GrabBike)
- Drag the map to the pickup point; malls and hotels often have marked drop-off zones
- Enter the destination (English shop / hotel names are often easier to find)
- Review the price → confirm
- Match the plate before you get in
For groups or large luggage, choose a car. For short hops in traffic, a bike can be faster—but skip it in heavy rain or with two big suitcases. Wear the helmet the driver usually provides.
Stuck: driver cannot find you → message in the app, or walk to a main-road curb; if the pin is wrong, cancel and rebook (a cancellation fee may apply). Fare suddenly spikes → wait a few minutes and retry, or walk / use metro for a stretch if that works.
Payment
- Card in the app: convenient; charged automatically when the trip ends
- Cash: pay in VND; keep small notes for change

Airports and popular spots
Tan Son Nhat (SGN) and Noi Bai (HAN): after immigration, open Grab and follow Pickup. Other options into town are covered in each airport guide.
Da Nang: city hotels and night markets also rely heavily on Grab; for long mountain sightseeing runs, check the estimate before you skip a tour shuttle.
Old-town alleys and attraction areas: the pin drifts easily—walk to a corner or open space before you request so pickup is smoother.
Pairing with HCMC and Hanoi
For the airport leg: HCMC → Tan Son Nhat to the city; Hanoi → Noi Bai to the city. In city traffic, a bike can beat a car on short hops, but large luggage still needs a car.
Safety and peak hours
- Rain, rush hour, and holidays mean longer waits and higher fares—that is normal
- Keep valuables where you can see them
- If a driver asks you to stop at an ATM to “help,” refuse
- At night, wait at well-lit corners—do not follow anyone into a dark alley
