On a trip to Singapore, there’s more to see than Marina Bay Sands and Universal Studios. You can also hop over to Malaysia for a day!

Just across the border to the north of Singapore is Johor Bahru (JB for short) in the state of Johor, home to Legoland Malaysia, shopping malls, cafés and great local food.

But if it’s your first time planning a Singapore–Malaysia twin-city trip, a few questions tend to come up:

  • “How many times do I have to get off the bus for immigration?”
  • “Isn’t the train ride only five minutes?”
  • “Can a private car really take me there without changing vehicles?”
  • “For a JB day trip, how many arrival cards do I need to fill in?”

The right choice really depends on your needs: if you want to save on transport, take a cross-border bus; if traffic on the crossing is your biggest worry, book the Shuttle Tebrau train early; and if you’re traveling with little kids, big luggage or a group, compare licensed cross-border taxis or the shuttle buses listed by the theme park itself.

Whichever option you choose, you’ll still need to clear immigration when leaving and entering each country.

1. How to Get from Singapore to Johor Bahru: Three Options Compared

TransportBest forWatch out for
Cross-border buses such as CW1 and CW2Backpackers and budget travelersYou get off for immigration in both countries, and peak-hour waits can be long
KTM Shuttle TebrauTravelers who want to avoid Causeway trafficTickets sell out easily, and you need to arrive at the station early
Licensed cross-border taxiFamilies, older travelers and groupsMake sure it has a cross-border operating permit
Legoland shuttle busTravelers heading mainly to LegolandFixed schedules, so mind the meeting time

One thing to keep in mind first:

The train takes about five minutes to cross the Causeway, but that doesn’t mean you’ll get from your Singapore hotel to downtown JB in five minutes. Getting to and from the checkpoints, checking in, clearing immigration and exiting the station all take extra time.

2. Do Taiwanese Passport Holders Need a Visa for Johor Bahru? How to Fill In the MDAC

Taiwanese passport holders visiting Malaysia for short-term tourism can generally enjoy 30 days visa-free, though the actual length of stay is up to the immigration officer.

Make sure your passport has at least six months of validity left, and keep your return transport and accommodation details on hand.

Even if you’re only doing a day trip from Singapore to JB, Taiwanese travelers generally still need to fill in the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) as required.

How to Fill In the MDAC

  1. Go to the official website within the three-day submission window before you arrive in Malaysia.
  2. Enter your name in English exactly as it appears on your passport, plus your nationality, passport number and expiry date.
  3. Enter your planned arrival and departure dates and mode of transport.
  4. Day trippers should truthfully select their type of stay and destination from the system options.
  5. After submitting, keep the confirmation email in case you’re asked for it.

Visa-free doesn’t mean MDAC-free. And don’t mistake paid agency websites you find online for the official service.

Coming Back to Singapore the Same Day: Do You Need Another SG Arrival Card?

Pay close attention here!

Taiwanese short-term tourists returning to Singapore from JB on the same day generally still need to submit an SG Arrival Card for re-entry. It should be done within three days before you arrive in Singapore, including the day of arrival.

So on this Singapore–Malaysia day trip, besides Malaysia’s MDAC, don’t forget Singapore’s SGAC for the return leg.

3. Woodlands Checkpoint: How to Take a Cross-Border Bus

The most common misconception for first-timers on a cross-border bus is: “Once I’m on, I just ride all the way to JB, right?”

In reality, on cross-border buses through Woodlands Checkpoint you usually have to get off once for Singapore departure clearance, and again for Malaysia arrival clearance.

For example, Causeway Link’s CW1 can depart from around Kranji MRT, while CW2 has boarding points such as Queen Street. Always check the latest official announcements for actual routes, stops and fares.

Bus Immigration Process from Singapore to Johor Bahru

Step 1 | Board the cross-border bus

Head to the designated boarding point and confirm the bus route and fare.

Step 2 | Depart Singapore at Woodlands

When you reach Woodlands Checkpoint, get off with your passport and all your belongings, and clear Singapore departure immigration.

Step 3 | Reboard to cross the Causeway

Follow the bus company’s instructions and wait in the designated area. You may not need to get back on the same bus, but you must follow your ticket and the operator’s rules.

Step 4 | Enter Malaysia at the CIQ

At Sultan Iskandar CIQ in Johor Bahru, get off again for Malaysian immigration and customs.

Step 5 | Arrive at JB Sentral

Once you’ve cleared immigration, you can head around JB Sentral, or continue on to Legoland and other attractions.

The return trip is the same in reverse, so leave time for immigration checks in both countries.

4. How to Book the KTM Shuttle Tebrau: Fares and Check-In Times

If you’d rather not get stuck in traffic on the Causeway, consider the KTMB Shuttle Tebrau.

Its route runs: Woodlands Train Checkpoint ↔ JB Sentral

This is the cross-border train already in operation, not the RTS Link, which hasn’t opened yet.

Shuttle Tebrau Fares

DirectionReference one-way fare for non-Malaysians
Woodlands → JB SentralS$5
JB Sentral → WoodlandsRM5

Note that the two directions are priced in different currencies, and you need a valid ticket for each leg.

How to Book the Shuttle Tebrau

  1. Open the official KTMB booking website.
  2. Search for Shuttle Tebrau and choose your date, direction and departure time.
  3. Enter your name, passport number and expiry date as shown on your passport.
  4. Complete payment and save your booking details.
  5. On the day, arrive at the station early and follow the instructions for ticket checks and immigration.

How Early Should You Get to the Station?

Under KTMB’s current official rules:

  • Woodlands: boarding gates usually open 40 minutes before departure and close 20 minutes before.
  • JB Sentral: boarding gates usually open 30 minutes before departure and close 10 minutes before.

You must bring the original valid passport matching your booking details. A screenshot of your booking is not a substitute.

Tickets for popular times can sell out in advance, so check availability as soon as your dates are set.

5. Can You Hire a Private Car from Singapore to Johor Bahru? 2026 Rules for Legal Transfers

When traveling with kids, strollers or big luggage, many people search for “private car from Singapore straight to a JB hotel.” There’s a very important 2026 update to know about.

Since May 2026, Singapore and Malaysia have expanded the service areas for licensed cross-border taxis and added bookings through approved platforms.

But that doesn’t mean any regular GrabCar, private van or online operator calling itself a private car service can legally offer paid cross-border rides.

Five Things to Check Before Booking a Cross-Border Car

  1. Whether it’s a licensed cross-border taxi or an authorized service.
  2. Whether your pick-up and drop-off points fall within the vehicle’s cross-border permit.
  3. Whether the quote includes bridge tolls, road charges and waiting fees.
  4. Whether a suitable child car seat is available if you’re traveling with babies or toddlers.
  5. Whether you need to get out at immigration, or follow lane rules and officers’ instructions.

Also, if you’re only going to Legoland, you can compare the partner cross-border shuttle buses listed on the park’s official website. Some depart from places like Suntec City or Jurong East, but double-check the actual schedules and meeting points.

6. How to Plan a Day Trip to Legoland in Johor Bahru

LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort is located in Iskandar Puteri, Johor. It’s not right outside JB Sentral.

According to the park, the drive from JB Sentral normally takes about 20–25 minutes, though traffic can affect it.

Suggested Day Trip Itinerary

Morning: Leave Singapore as early as you can, clear immigration and head to Legoland.

Daytime: Make the theme park your focus. If you want to add SEA LIFE or the Water Park, check your ticket type and your kids’ energy levels first.

Evening: Head back on the return train or shuttle you’ve already booked, and don’t schedule your return too late.

2026 Official Ticket Prices

Theme Park 1-Day TicketRM205RM175
Theme Park + SEA LIFERM285RM225
Theme Park + Water Park + SEA LIFERM345RM285

Children under three generally get in free, though the Water Park has its own specific rules.

Online pre-booking or special events may offer discounts, so always refer to Legoland’s official ticket prices.

For a same-day round trip, trying to squeeze in all three parks usually isn’t a good idea. Border crossings, getting around and meals can eat up a lot of time.

7. Not Going to Legoland? Other Day Trip Ideas in Johor Bahru

If you’re not traveling with kids, or don’t want to spend the whole day at a theme park, you can turn your trip into a stroll around downtown JB and a food crawl.

Johor Bahru City Square / Komtar JBCC

Located around JB Sentral, these are perfect for shopping, eating and grabbing a coffee right after you clear immigration.

If you only have half a day in JB, make this your first stop to cut down on travel time.

Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque

The Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque is one of JB’s most iconic historic buildings.

When visiting, respect the dress code and opening rules of this place of worship, and don’t assume you can go inside at any time.

JB Cafés and Local Snacks

If you want to try local food, save some time for kaya toast, coffee and Malaysian eateries.

My tip: for a day trip, stick to one area so you don’t spend all your time hailing rides and getting around.

8. How to Avoid Peak Traffic at Woodlands Checkpoint

The Singapore–Malaysia land checkpoints handle huge numbers of commuters and cross-border vehicles. On weekends, school holidays, festivals and long weekends in either country, queues can get much longer.

Generally, these times are worth watching out for:

  • Weekday morning and evening commuting hours.
  • Fridays heading into JB.
  • Sundays heading back to Singapore.
  • Around Singapore and Malaysian long weekends and school holidays.

That said, actual traffic depends on the date, road accidents, roadworks and ad-hoc checks, so there’s no time slot that’s “guaranteed jam-free.”

Try to travel on off-peak days, check traffic updates beforehand, and don’t plan your return too tightly.

Can You Take the RTS Link in 2026?

Not yet.

On October 2, 2026, Singapore’s LTA announced that the RTS Link is currently expected to start carrying passengers only in February 2027, and it still needs safety certification and final approval.

So when planning a Singapore–Malaysia crossing in 2026, don’t count the RTS Link as an available option, since it hasn’t opened yet.

9. Choosing a Singapore–Malaysia eSIM: Do You Need to Switch SIMs When Crossing?

If you’re using Google Maps in Singapore to find the checkpoint, then opening Grab or checking Legoland tickets once you’re in Malaysia, staying online across the border really matters.

One of the easiest ways is to buy a regional roaming eSIM whose coverage clearly includes both Singapore and Malaysia.

If your phone, plan and partner networks all support it, you can usually keep the same eSIM profile and reconnect to a local network in each country.

What to Watch Out for with a Multi-Country eSIM

First: make sure it really supports both countries.

Not every Singapore eSIM works in Malaysia, and vice versa.

Second: you may briefly lose connection when crossing the border.

Your phone may need to search for and register on a different network, so an instant, seamless switch isn’t guaranteed.

Third: network conditions may differ between the two countries.

Even if the same product supports both countries, partner carriers, 4G/5G coverage and actual speeds may still differ.

Fourth: check your data roaming settings.

Depending on your plan, you may need to turn on data roaming for your travel eSIM, but make sure your Taiwan number doesn’t rack up unexpected international data charges.

Fifth: “unlimited” doesn’t always mean no speed cap.

Before buying, check the high-speed data allowance, throttling, fair use policy and hotspot rules.

How Much Data Do You Need for a Singapore–Malaysia Day Trip?

If you’re just using navigation, Grab, checking train tickets, opening MDAC/SGAC info and sending LINE messages, start with about 0.5–1.5GB per person per day as a planning baseline.

If you’ll be sharing a hotspot with others, uploading videos or watching short videos, budget more data. This is a pre-trip estimate, not an official average usage figure.

Singapore to Johor Bahru FAQ

Do I need my passport to go from Singapore to Johor Bahru?

Yes. Crossing between the two countries is a formal departure and entry, so Taiwanese travelers must bring their original valid passport. On the Shuttle Tebrau, you must also use the passport that matches your booking details.

Do Taiwanese travelers need to fill in the MDAC for Johor Bahru?

Generally, yes. Visa-free short-term tourism doesn’t exempt you from the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card, which you should submit for free within the required period.

If I return to Singapore from Johor Bahru on the same day, do I need another SG Arrival Card?

Taiwanese short-term tourists generally need to submit a new one for re-entry into Singapore, within the required three-day submission window.

Does the Shuttle Tebrau really take only five minutes?

The train takes about five minutes to cross the Causeway, but check-in, immigration and getting to and from the stations all take extra time.

Can I buy Shuttle Tebrau tickets at the station on the day?

If seats are still available, you can buy them under KTMB’s rules, but popular dates may sell out in advance, so it’s best to book on the official website.

Can I book a Grab in Singapore to go straight to Legoland?

Don’t assume any regular GrabCar can legally carry passengers across the border. Use a licensed cross-border taxi, an eligible platform service or a legal shuttle bus that complies with both Singapore and Malaysian rules.

Will a Singapore–Malaysia eSIM never drop the connection?

Not necessarily. When crossing the border, your phone may need to search for and register on a different network, so a brief loss of connection is possible.

Can I take the RTS Link in 2026?

As of October 2026, it hasn’t opened yet. It’s officially expected to start carrying passengers in February 2027, pending safety certification and approval.

Plan Your Return First, Then Decide How Much of JB to See

If it’s your first time planning a Singapore and Johor Bahru twin-city trip, here’s what I most want you to remember:

Don’t just count the travel time between attractions; factor in immigration in both countries, check-in and traffic too.

To save on transport, take a cross-border bus; to avoid Causeway road traffic, book the Shuttle Tebrau early; and if you’re heading straight to Legoland with kids, it’s worth comparing legal transfers or the partner buses listed by the park.

Then get your MDAC, your return SG Arrival Card and a travel eSIM that truly supports both Singapore and Malaysia ready, and your cross-border day trip will go much more smoothly!
