Malaysia Entry Guide 2026: MDAC, Customs & Prep

First trips to Malaysia often stall on one question: do you need MDAC, and which site is official? Finish that before you stress about terminals and the ride into town.

This guide covers MDAC, passport basics, and the landing flow for independent travelers. Rules change—use the official links at the end; when wording differs, follow the government.

How to fill MDAC

Most foreign visitors must complete MDAC online before entering Malaysia. The official system is free.

1. Open only imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/mdac/main
2. Enter passport, flight, and Malaysian lodging details in English
3. Save the confirmation email / screen so you can find it offline
4. If the flight or hotel changes, update per system rules and save again

Timing: submit within 3 days before arrival (including arrival day). Finishing the day before departure is safer than typing at the gate.

Easy mistakes:

• Landing on a paid fake site → close it; only use the .gov.my official domain
• Name / date of birth mismatch with the passport → entry can stall; double-check after submit
• Exemptions (some long-term residents / special statuses) follow the latest Immigration notice—do not guess

Visas and passports

MDAC is only a declaration card. Taiwan passports often enter Malaysia visa-free for short tourism, but days and conditions change. Recheck Taiwan MFA and Malaysian official pages before you go.

• Passport validity is commonly expected to cover at least 6 months
• Keep return / onward proof and hotel bookings when asked

Rough landing flow

Customs reminders

• Official guidance: carrying cash / negotiable instruments over about USD 10,000 equivalent must be declared
• Taking MYR out also has rules—check Immigration / central-bank notices for details
• Do not bring prohibited items; tobacco and alcohol have duty-free concepts

Cash and data (usable right after landing)

• Malls take cards well, but snacks and transit top-ups still often need cash—see the payment guide
