Planning a winter trip from Seoul? Nami Island, Elysian Gangchon, and N Seoul Tower, with trains, tickets, ski lessons, what to wear, and a Korea eSIM.

A winter scene in a Korean drama tends to leave the same picture behind: a tree-lined path under snow, fish-cake broth steaming at the curb, and Seoul streets lit up after dark. If you want that season for real this time, and you would rather not spend the whole break on long transfers, Seoul still works as a base for a winter trip that changes pace.

If walking and photos are the point, go to Nami Island. If this is the first time you want ski boots on and a real run under you, put Elysian Gangchon on the plan. If shopping, food, and a night view should share one city day, N Seoul Tower fits. The three places play differently, and getting there is not equally easy. Decide what you actually want to do before you try to squeeze all three into a single day. That usually makes the trip more fun.

Which month for a Korean winter, and which view are you after?

A Korean winter roughly runs from month 12 into month 2 of the following year. Seoul can snow when a cold air mass arrives, but the city is not under snow every day of the season. If the goal is the white trees on Nami Island, treat a snowfall as a pleasant surprise and leave room to shift the plan. Even without snow, the winter lanes with bare branches, mist along the river, and a cold morning light have a quiet of their own.

People who want to ski usually have an easier time hitting an open resort from mid month 12 through month 2. The real opening still depends on temperature, how snowmaking is going, and the weather. For Elysian Gangchon, the official opening day of the 2026–2027 season, the night-ski schedule, and the shuttle times still need a check against the official notice before you leave. Do not build the trip on last season’s timetable.

With only 3 days and 2 nights, pick either Nami Island or Gangchon as the main day outside the city, and save the tower for another evening. The pace is easier. With 4 to 5 days, you can give the scenery one day and the skiing another, instead of rushing between snowy places the whole time.

1. Nami Island: walk the Winter Sonata lanes and take the season slowly

Nami Island often pulls people in with a single photo: a long path through the trees, trunks lined up on both sides, snow on the ground, and a quiet that looks like a film still. The place became famous through the Korean drama Winter Sonata, and you can still find the familiar filming spots. The part worth the time, though, is walking the island paths slowly.

Administratively, Nami Island sits in Chuncheon, Gangwon State. Most visitors still start from Gapyeong Station in Gyeonggi-do and take the boat from the Gapyeong ferry pier. That is why a ticket search shows both Gapyeong and Chuncheon. You are not in the wrong city. Set the destination as the Nami Island pier first.

What is there to see on Nami Island in winter?

The famous stretch is Metasequoia Lane. Without the autumn color, the straight trunks and the gray-blue sky stand out more. Right after a snowfall, the ground and the branches go white, and the photos come easily. The ginkgo avenue, the drama memorial spots, and the small cafes along the way can share the same walk. For portraits, go in the morning before the crowd is fully in, and shoot with the light on people’s faces so expressions stay clear.

The island has restaurants, cafes, and places to sit. You do not need to stand outside all day with a packed lunch. The comfortable winter walk is a stretch outside, then a hot drink indoors, then the next path. With older relatives or children, that also means less time spent in a cold wind without a break.

If you have seen someone else’s snow photos, remember that those were that day’s weather. Seoul and Gapyeong can split the same day between snow and plain cloud. Do not make “a white forest today, or the day failed” the only goal. The island is still worth walking slowly.

Nami Island tickets, ferries, and how you get onto the island

On the general ticket Nami Island currently publishes, an adult pays ₩19,000, and that already includes the regular ferry both ways. The discounted ticket for middle and high school students and similar categories is ₩16,000. Children and other special discounts have their own prices. Riding the zip line onto the island is a separate charge, and it is also subject to weather limits. It is not part of the standard ticket.

The published ferry window is currently 08:00–21:00. Boats are generally more frequent from about 09:00–18:00, and early and late in the day they run about every half hour. A cold snap, strong wind, or a special event can change the schedule. If Nami Island is the last stop of the day, check the return boat and the train back to Seoul before you commit. The crossing itself is short, and the ride is a chance to see the Bukhan River in winter.

How do you get from Seoul to Nami Island?

On your own, take the Gyeongchun Line (경춘선) from Seoul to Gapyeong Station (가평역), or take the ITX-Cheongchun (ITX-청춘) from Yongsan, Cheongnyangni, and other stations to Gapyeong. The ITX makes fewer stops and usually saves time compared with riding a local train the whole way. Whether a useful departure exists still depends on the booking system.

From Gapyeong Station, a taxi to the Nami Island ferry pier is about 5 minutes. Walking from the station to the pier is about 30 minutes. In winter, with luggage, a thick coat, or ice on the pavement, there is no need to force that walk just to save a short taxi fare. Reserved shuttles also leave from central Seoul, which suits people who do not want to work out the transfers themselves.

If you want Nami Island, the Garden of Morning Calm, and the Gangchon Rail Bike on the same day, a day tour is one way to do it. Every extra stop, though, cuts into walking time on the island. If the winter forest is the photo you actually want, giving Nami Island half a day on its own is usually the better use of the time.

2. Elysian Gangchon: a first ski day in Korea can start here

One appealing thing about skiing in Korea is that you do not have to fly to a remote mountain and stay several nights. A same-day ski trip can start from Seoul. Elysian Gangchon (엘리시안 강촌), in Chuncheon, is one of the easier ones to line up by public transport.

Standing on skis feels different from looking at snow. Fresh out of the rental shop, even walking on flat ground can feel odd. On the practice slope you slowly pick up stance, stopping, and turns. On a first day, being able to stop cleanly and point yourself where you mean to go is already a real result. There is no need to chase the steepest run.

Is Elysian Gangchon suitable for beginners?

The Korea Tourism Organization describes 10 runs at Elysian Gangchon, 8 of them suited to beginner and intermediate skiers, with a slope layout that is relatively kind to people starting out. Rentals and lessons are available on site, so you do not need to haul a full kit from Taiwan.

For a first time on skis, leave at least half a day to practice. Boots, skis, protective gear, and the lesson are priced separately or bundled into a package. Before you pay, check whether the coach, the lift ticket, and the equipment are included. Some Chinese-speaking coaches are supplied by a travel agency or an outside ski school, and Chinese-language service is not guaranteed on every session. If you need it, ask and book before you go.

If you only want to be in the snow and take a few photos, you can also look at activities that do not include a formal lesson. Do not walk up an icy slope in ordinary sneakers. With children especially, non-slip shoes, warm gloves, and suitable protection matter more than whether the photo looks perfect.

What is the most convenient way from Seoul to Gangchon?

The usual way without a car is the Gyeongchun Line to Baegyangni Station (백양리역, Baegyangni), then the resort shuttle to the slopes. If you start with ITX-Cheongchun from Yongsan or Cheongnyangni, check the actual stops of that train, then change to the Gyeongchun Line at a station where the two connect. Do not assume every ITX stops at Baegyangni.

The resort shuttle does not use one timetable all year. Some times you can see on the site now are the non-ski-season schedule. The winter shuttle, the Seoul round-trip bus, and the way back after night skiing need to be checked again against the notice for the season you are about to enter. For a beginner this matters as much as choosing the lesson. If you plan to ski until evening and you have not looked up the last shuttle, getting back to Seoul is more trouble than it looks.

If you do not want to change trains with a ski jacket and ski pants in your arms, look for a ski day tour that includes a Seoul meeting point, instruction, and gear. When you compare tours, do not stop at the cheapest price. Lesson length, the coach’s language, the type of gear, the protection, and the meeting point belong in the same look, so you can tell which package actually fits.

Can you do Elysian Gangchon and Nami Island on the same day?

Both sit around Chuncheon and Gapyeong, so on a map they can share one trip outside Seoul. If you have booked a formal lesson of more than 2 hours, and you still have to count rental, changing clothes, a meal, and the rides, it is usually a bad idea to force Nami Island into the same day. Winter evenings get dark early. By the time you reach the island, there may be little walking time left.

The more relaxed split is one slow day on Nami Island and another day only for skiing. If the trip is short and you only want a brief touch of snow, then a half-day combination of Nami Island plus sights near Gangchon is the version to consider, and only after you have checked that day’s connections. Two pins that look close on a map are not a walk.

3. N Seoul Tower: a winter night view without leaving the city

The first two places mean a ride out of Seoul. N Seoul Tower fits an afternoon or evening that stays in the city. After Myeongdong and a hot Korean meal, go up Namsan and watch the lights come on one by one. It is a gentle way to close the day.

N Seoul Tower stands on Namsan, and the view looks out over different sides of the city. Clear winter air can make distant buildings easier to pick out. Haze, cloud, or falling snow can also hide them. If you want sunset turning into the night view, go up a little earlier. You do not have to wait until it is fully dark to leave the hotel.

Do you have to buy an observatory ticket for N Seoul Tower?

No. Around the tower there is outdoor viewing space, a love-lock area, and places to walk and take photos. If you only want the night view, you do not have to buy the paid observatory ticket. If you want to look down on Seoul from a high floor and get out of the wind, then the paid deck is worth considering. On the operator’s current notice, an adult ticket for the paid observatory is ₩29,000. Actual entry and package deals follow the notice on the day you buy.

On a winter evening the wind at the top is usually stronger than on the streets of Myeongdong, and hands get cold while you shoot. If you like night photos, bring a small tripod or use a safe spot against a fixed rail. Do not climb over a railing for the frame. Wipe the fog off the phone lens first. The night shot usually comes out cleaner.

Namsan cable car or the loop bus: which one?

If you want the cable car, and the city opening up under your feet, walk from Myeongdong Station to the Namsan cable car station. The operator lists ordinary hours as 10:00–23:00, and an adult round-trip ticket is ₩15,000. The cable car can stop for strong wind or maintenance. In winter, check the official status before you head up.

To save energy and money, take the 01A/01B Namsan loop bus. On N Seoul Tower’s own transport note, the route passes Chungmuro Station and the Dongguk University Station area, and it does not take cash. Have a transit card that actually works. Ordinary vehicles cannot drive onto the road in front of the tower, so a taxi to the neighborhood may still not drop you at the door.

If someone in the group is older, a child, or has trouble walking, check the stops and the slope of the walk before you go. After the cable car you still have a stretch on foot. After snow, some stairs and paths can be slippery. An easier way down usually matters more than the way up.

How do you split the three places? Sample trips for 3 days and 5 days

3 days and 2 nights: a first winter in Seoul

Day 1 | Arrive in Seoul, walk Myeongdong, N Seoul Tower at night

Check into a hotel in the city first. If the flight leaves you enough of the day, eat and shop in Myeongdong in the afternoon, then take the cable car or the loop bus up Namsan in the evening. Staying out of the suburbs on the first day leaves more energy for what comes next.

Day 2 | A day trip to Nami Island

After breakfast, go to Gapyeong, take the ferry, and give the morning through early afternoon to the tree lanes, a cafe, and lunch. Back in Seoul in the evening, dinner can be in Hongdae or near the hotel. If skiing is the main goal, this day can be swapped straight for a ski day trip to Elysian Gangchon.

Day 3 | Seoul in the daytime, then the airport

Use the flight time to choose Gyeongbokgung, Seongsu-dong, or a cafe, and leave enough time to reach the airport and check in. A winter coat, a heavy bag, and the chance of a delay are all reasons to keep a little extra buffer.

5 days and 4 nights: Nami Island, skiing, and Seoul

With 5 days you can slow down. On the first day, after you arrive, do Myeongdong and the tower. The second day is Nami Island. The third day is only skiing at Elysian Gangchon. The fourth day is back in Seoul for Hongdae, Seongsu-dong, or a traditional market. The fifth day is for souvenirs and the trip home. That order also lets you swap the second and third days if the weather changes, which helps if the resort suspends operations or the suburbs get heavy snow.

A hotel in central Seoul means more choices for transport and meals, and you are not changing hotels the whole time. If you want Nami Island at dawn and you want to skip the round trip, one night in Gapyeong or Chuncheon is an option. For a first independent trip to Korea, keeping one base is usually easier on the budget.

What do you wear for a Korean winter? Do not ski and shop in the same outfit

The most useful winter outfit in Seoul is layers you can take off. A base layer that wicks and keeps you warm, fleece or a sweater in the middle, and a wind shell or a down jacket outside. The subway, department stores, and restaurants are often heated. If you pile on pieces you cannot remove, you sweat and then get cold.

On Nami Island the walk is long, so warm socks, non-slip soles, and gloves matter more than simply wearing something thick. For the resort, pack waterproof gloves, ski socks, and a ski jacket and pants that fit the conditions. If you rarely use ski clothes, compare what the local rental includes before you fill the suitcase. Keep the phone in an inner pocket. A power bank lasts better if it is not left out in the cold for a long time.

In photos, a wide field of white snow easily makes people too dark, so a small exposure adjustment helps. For night shots, check whether the lens has fogged. Falling snow on Nami Island depends on that day’s snowfall and the wind. There is no need to run on an icy stretch or go near dangerous water just for the picture.

How do you stay online on an independent trip to Korea? Maps in the snow, train changes, and ride-hailing all use it

Finding the ferry pier from Gapyeong Station, checking the Elysian Gangchon shuttle, and planning a bus in Seoul with Naver Map all need a working phone connection. Travelers from Taiwan also commonly use KakaoMap, Kakao T, and LINE to reach friends. Installing the apps you need and signing in before you leave is easier than figuring out the menus after you land.

If you will keep checking maps and sending photos, JEKO’s Korea eSIM comes in more than one shape. There is no need to stare only at the word “unlimited.” A better fit starts from how much you use in a day, and from whether you need to share a hotspot.

How you will use itJEKO plan worth a closer lookCheck before you buy

Several days on the move, and a backup across networksLG U+/SKT dual-network planExit IP, switching conditions, and hotspot support
Long livestreams, hotspot sharing, or a need for a local Korea IPSKT native planNumber of days, a phone number, and identity-check conditions

For example, the product page for JEKO’s SKT single-network daily plan lists a roaming route that uses a Hong Kong IP. After the high-speed data is used up, the speed drops to about 384kbps, and hotspot sharing is not supported. Another plan, the LG U+/SKT dual-network starter pass, lists high speed for the first 1GB each day, then about 10Mbps after that, and it does support hotspot sharing, but it is a Singapore IP roaming plan. If you need a local Korea IP, heavier use, or a Korean phone-number function, look separately at the SKT native product specs.

If the main jobs are uploading photos from Nami Island, checking shuttle times at Gangchon, and opening navigation on the way back to Seoul at night, you usually do not need an exaggerated speed number. On a ski slope, underground, or in a crowd, the actual signal still depends on the towers, the weather, and the device. Download a screenshot of the route and keep the hotel address. If the signal drops suddenly, you are not left with no direction at all.

If you want to pick the data from each day’s plan, compare daily, total, and unlimited options on the JEKO Korea eSIM plans page, then choose from phone compatibility and whether you need a hotspot. A travel eSIM does not necessarily come with a phone number that can receive Korean text messages. If a service needs a Korean number for verification, check that product’s conditions separately.

FAQ

Does Nami Island have snow every winter?

Not necessarily. Nami Island can hold snow in winter, but it is not a white forest every day. If the snow matters a lot to you, the weather and recent photos from Gapyeong and Chuncheon in the days before you leave are more useful than the month alone.

Does the Nami Island ticket include the ferry both ways?

On the regular ferry ticket the operator currently publishes, the general fare of ₩19,000 already includes the boat both ways. The zip line, special experiences, and separate purchases are extra.

Can you go to Elysian Gangchon if you have never skied?

Yes. There are practice runs that are relatively suitable for beginners. For a first time, book an introductory lesson. Do not skip the stopping and safety instruction on your own.

Does Elysian Gangchon always have a Chinese-speaking coach?

Not necessarily. Chinese-language lessons may be offered by a particular travel agency or ski school. Confirm the dates, the group size, and the language of the session when you book.

Do you have to pay to see the night view at N Seoul Tower?

No. You can see the outdoor view around the tower. You need a ticket only for the paid high-floor observatory. If time is short, walk the outside first, then decide whether to go up.

Can you do Nami Island and Elysian Gangchon in one day?

A very short stop at each might be possible. Once you add a real lesson, rentals, and photos, the day overfills easily. Two days is the better split, or pick one of them as the main stop that day.

Do you need to turn on data roaming for an eSIM in a Korean winter?

Follow the install notes for the product you bought. Some roaming travel eSIMs need data roaming switched on for that eSIM. You can switch data roaming off on your Taiwan primary line at the same time, so you do not accidentally use the original number and get a charge. When you switch, confirm that mobile data is set to the travel eSIM.

What if the connection is poor at the ski resort?

Stop moving in a safe spot first. Then check that you selected the right mobile-data line, that high-speed data is still left, and whether roaming needs to be on. If it is still unstable, try reconnecting, or switch to an allowed network as the product notes describe. Keep an offline screenshot of shuttle times and the return ticket before you go.

A winter in Seoul is better when you leave a little time to walk

Nami Island is for walking the trees. Elysian Gangchon is where a first day on skis can feel like something. N Seoul Tower puts a whole city’s night in front of you. You do not have to rush all three in one day, and you do not have to make every stop match a photo you saw online. Leave some slack in the days outside the city, and check the transport before you go. A Korean winter sits more comfortably that way.

Before you leave, along with gloves, warm clothes, and tickets, you can also set up a JEKO Korea travel eSIM that fits how you travel. Once you can look up a route and reach the people you are with, more of the time stays with the view you came for.
