Korea in Winter: Hwacheon Ice Fishing, Garden of Morning Calm Lights, and Lotte World Skating

Beyond skiing, a Korea winter can include the Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival in 2027, the Garden of Morning Calm light festival, and Lotte World indoor skating, with tickets, transport from Seoul, what to wear, and a Korea eSIM.

Share

A winter trip to Korea can start to feel like the same city loop once Myeongdong and Hongdae are already on the list. Ice fishing, a night of garden lights, and skating are three ways to change the pace. Each one has its own feel. At the Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival you step onto a frozen river and fish. In Gapyeong, the Garden of Morning Calm light festival fills the garden with lights after dark. If the plan is to stay inside Seoul, the Lotte World ice rink is easy to reach and much less tied to the weather outside.

The three places do not sit well on the same day. Hwacheon is a long ride, the lights are at their best after dusk, and the rink is on the subway in central Seoul, which makes it a good relaxed afternoon. Dates, prices, transport, how to reserve, and mobile data are gathered here so the plan is easier to set before you leave, and so there is less doubling back on the road.

One difference matters when you pick dates: Hwacheon ice fishing and the Garden of Morning Calm lights are seasonal winter events; the Lotte World indoor rink is open all year. If the trip is not in January, Lotte World can still work, but the Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival may not be on.

1. Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival: a Korean winter on a frozen river

The first photos of Hwacheon ice fishing are hard to scroll past. Round fishing holes line a wide sheet of ice, and visitors in down jackets sit on small chairs waiting for a bite. For someone who has lived in Taiwan for years, just standing on a frozen river already feels new, and holding a rod while a mountain trout comes up through the hole is the moment people wait for.

Hwacheon is in Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, and the main activities run along the Hwacheoncheon (화천천). The festival is more than fishing. There are sleds, games on the ice, and catching fish by hand, and grilled mountain trout is served on site. It works well with friends. With children, pick the gentler snow-and-ice activities for their age.

When is the 2027 Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival?

The dates Korea Tourism Organization has posted for 2027 are 1/9 to 1/31, and the main site is in Hwacheon-eup. Daytime programs are usually in the daytime, and night fishing is scheduled separately. An outdoor winter festival still depends on the ice and the weather, so it helps to check the dates before flights are locked in. A few days before you actually leave, look again to see whether the organizer has changed which areas are open or what time things run.

Official festival site: Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival. Korea Tourism Organization: Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival.

How does the ice fishing work? Do you need to bring a rod?

The fishing itself is simple. You get entry for the assigned ice-fishing area, follow staff to a hole, and try slowly with a small rod and a lure. The fish do not always bite quickly. People in the group sometimes talk more seriously than they fish, and that is part of the day. If a fish does come up, ask the grilled-fish or cooking area about the rules for using it.

The site is usually split into reserved areas, walk-up tickets, and areas for foreign visitors, but ticket types, opening hours, and how you sign up can change by year. When this was checked, the full 2027 prices and reservation rules were not all published, so do not pay last year’s price, and do not assume the same ticket will be on sale at the gate. If you want a set entry time on a weekend, look at the official reservation notice first. On a day tour with a Chinese-speaking guide, check that the package really includes ice-fishing entry and tackle. The words “Hwacheon ice fishing” on a tour name do not mean everything is covered.

There is no need to fly a full fishing kit over from Taiwan. Simple gear that works here is usually sold on site or nearby. Whether tackle is free, and whether a certain bait is allowed, still follows that year’s rules. For a first visit, warm fingers and warm soles matter more. Standing and sitting on the ice for a long time is nothing like walking a street in Seoul.

How do you get from Seoul to Hwacheon?

On your own, take an intercity bus to Hwacheon from Dong-Seoul Bus Terminal (동서울종합터미널), near Gangbyeon Station on subway Line 2. Departures and ride time change with the route and that day’s traffic, so allowing about 3 hours one way leaves more room. From Hwacheon intercity bus terminal, walk or transfer again based on the festival entrance and that year’s shuttle. Check the return buses when you arrive. That is much calmer than discovering, late in the afternoon, that no suitable bus is left.

If transfers are not the point of the trip, compare ice-fishing day tours that leave from Seoul. They usually meet in Hongdae, Myeongdong, or Dongdaemun, which suits anyone without Korean and anyone who does not want to wait in the cold with luggage. Before you pay, see whether fishing entry, tackle, the guide’s language, and the return meeting time are included. A tour titled as a Hwacheon ice-fishing trip is not automatically all-inclusive.

If Chuncheon is already on the route, you can go there first and change to a bus for Hwacheon. That suits travelers who already know Korean transport and want to set their own pace. For a first try at ice fishing, a direct bus or a day tour with pickup is the easier day.

What should you wear for ice fishing?

A down jacket is only the baseline. Shoes are the part people skip. Cold from the ice keeps coming up through the soles, so boots with grip, waterproofing, and a thicker sole, plus warm socks, are the practical set. Gloves should still let you use a phone and small tackle, and a dry spare pair is worth packing. Hand warmers, a scarf, and a hat help too, but do not leave the gloves off for a long stretch just to take photos.

With children, pack an extra set of dry socks and gloves. Cuffs get wet quickly once they meet snow. If the wind is strong that day, keep the time on the ice shorter, step inside for a break, and have a hot drink. The outing is more comfortable that way.

2. Garden of Morning Calm lights: a winter walk that starts after dark

Next to the busy ice at Hwacheon, the Garden of Morning Calm is a different kind of winter. In daylight it is a hillside garden. As the sky darkens, trees, paths, and flower beds switch on in color, and the grounds look like another place. It suits anyone who likes night photos, or anyone who wants one romantic evening on a Seoul trip.

The Garden of Morning Calm is in Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do. The Five-color Starlight Garden inside it is 오색별빛정원전 in Korean, and it is usually held from early December into mid-March the next year. The grounds are not the same in every corner. Paths rise and fall, there are light tunnels, and some areas pair plants with lighting. Walking slowly is how the change shows up.

Are the 2026–2027 light dates out yet?

The last official season that can be confirmed is 2025/12/5 to 2026/3/15. Some websites already estimate that the new season starts in early December 2026, but the full 2026–2027 dates should follow the Garden of Morning Calm’s official notice. Anyone aiming for early December needs to be careful. Past years are not enough reason to lock a trip that cannot be changed.

Last season the lights started around 17:00, ran until 21:00 on most days, and could stay on until 23:00 on Saturday. Once the garden posts the new season, shift the arrival time to those hours. If the lights are the reason for the visit, evening arrival fits best. You can learn the paths before it is fully dark, and shoot from dusk into the night view.

Official event page: Garden of Morning Calm. Korea Tourism Organization: Five-color Starlight Garden.

What do tickets cost, and how long should you stay for photos?

Korea Tourism Organization currently lists garden tickets at ₩11,000 for adults, ₩8,500 for youth, and ₩7,500 for children. Those are prices the garden has already announced. Whether the new season changes them is up to the garden. Most visitors do not need to treat this like a large theme park. About an hour and a half to 2 hours of walking and photos is comfortable. Anyone shooting the lights slowly on a tripod can stay longer.

The hour when the night view looks best is also the coldest hour in the garden. Because you stop for photos, it can feel colder than walking in the city. Night shots drain a phone. If the cold gets to you, keep the photos to a few favorite spots and find a hot drink along the way. There is no need to stay outside all night.

How do you get to the Garden of Morning Calm from Seoul?

Independent travelers usually take the Gyeongchun Line (경춘선) to around Cheongpyeong Station (청평역), then a local bus or a taxi. Shuttles from other Gapyeong stations are worth comparing too. The part that actually needs attention is the ride back at night. A sightseeing loop bus may not keep running until the garden closes, and evening buses can be fewer.

If the plan is to stay past 20:00, check the last bus, estimate the taxi fare, or book a night tour that includes the return. Some people put Nami Island and the Garden of Morning Calm on one day: a walk on Nami Island in the daytime, a move to the garden in the afternoon, and the lights in the evening. The geography is reasonably on the way. How long you actually stay depends on that day’s shuttle and on sunset.

For photos, have the person you are with stand a little to the side of a light tunnel. The frame usually looks more natural than the crowded entrance. Snow and lights in one picture are beautiful, but Gapyeong does not snow every winter night. Even with no snow on the ground, the light festival is still worth the visit.

3. Lotte World ice rink: an easy skate inside Seoul

On a trip of only 3 or 4 days, or with family who do not want half a day on a bus to the suburbs, the Lotte World indoor rink is the easier piece to place. It sits inside Lotte World at Jamsil in Seoul, under a large glass dome, with the park and the mall busy around it. Snow or wind outside does not have to cancel the skating.

It is especially kind to a first time on the ice. Compared with finding your way on an outdoor sheet, the indoor rink has skate rental and clear areas. Anyone who stays off the ice can wait nearby, take photos, or rest. The rink is open all year. On a winter trip to Korea it simply feels more seasonal.

How do Lotte World rink tickets and skate rental work?

These are the general 2026 prices published by Lotte World. At the counter, separate “admission only” from “admission plus skate rental.” A first visit usually needs the second one.

2026 reference ticketWeekdayWeekend / public holiday
Adult admission₩15,000₩18,000
Child admission₩13,000₩15,000
Adult admission + skate rental₩21,000₩24,000
Child admission + skate rental₩19,000₩21,000

Skate rental on its own is ₩6,000. The official note says a basic skating session is 3 hours, including time for resurfacing the ice. Young children have a minimum age and an accompanying-adult rule. Under the 2026 rules, children born in 2021 or later cannot enter, and children born in 2020 must have a parent with them. Parents should read that year’s notice before bringing a child, so the group does not arrive and then find it cannot go in.

Official prices: Lotte World Ice Rink.

Opening hours and how to get there

Seoul’s official tourism site lists 2026 reference hours of 11:00–20:50 from Sunday to Thursday, and 11:00–21:20 on Friday, Saturday, and some holidays. The rink may shift those hours for an event or for resurfacing. Checking once more on the day you go is enough.

The ride is direct. Take Seoul subway Line 2 or Line 8 to Jamsil Station (잠실역) and follow the signs toward Lotte World. If there is energy left after skating, the Jamsil lakeside, the mall, or a nearby restaurant can follow. If Lotte World theme park is also on the same day, check the rink ticket and the park ticket separately. Do not assume one ticket includes the other.

A first skate does not need speed. Hold the side, find your balance, learn how to stop, and only then move toward the inner rink. Comfortable pants and socks, plus a pair of gloves, are enough. The rink is indoors, but it is still cold beside the ice. The point is the rare feeling of skating inside Seoul, not skating beautifully on the first try.

How should these three fit on a winter trip to Korea?

3 days, 2 nights: On a Seoul-based trip, give one afternoon to skating at Jamsil and use the rest for the city and food. If the light festival happens to be running, book a Garden of Morning Calm night tour on another evening. There is no need to force Hwacheon into a short trip.

4 days, 3 nights: Day 1 is arrival in Seoul, unpacking, and the city. Day 2 is a Hwacheon ice-fishing day tour. Day 3 afternoon is Nami Island or the Gapyeong area, and the evening is the garden lights. Day 4 is skating at Jamsil or shopping, depending on the flight. If the flight home is early, put skating on the arrival day or on another city day.

5 days, 4 nights: Spread the three experiences across different dates. There is no need to run from morning until late every day. Give Hwacheon a full day, pair the Garden of Morning Calm with Gapyeong sights for one day, and put Lotte World skating with the Jamsil area. Leave the rest for walking and food in Seoul.

With young children or older adults, standing outside for a long time at Hwacheon is the hardest on energy. The Gapyeong lights are mostly walking at night. The rink is close, but anyone who is not used to ice still needs to watch their safety. Matching the day to the people you are with matters more than filling every famous stop.

A few things worth preparing before a winter outing

Save the Korean names and ticket screenshots first

When you move between cities in Korea, a translated place name is sometimes not enough. Save “화천 산천어축제”, “아침고요수목원”, and “롯데월드 아이스링크” on your phone, and use Naver Map or KakaoMap for the station, the walking exit, and the meeting point. Keep an offline screenshot of the bus booking, the event ticket, and the hotel address. If the signal is poor at that moment, the details are still there.

Gloves, shoes with grip, and phone battery all matter

Snow outside and lights at night often feel colder than central Seoul, so warm soles and grip matter most. Long photo sessions also drain the phone faster, and cold can make the battery look weaker for a while. A power bank in an inner pocket, close to your body, with the phone kept dry, is more useful than an outer coat pocket in the cold.

Leave slack in the transport, especially the way back

Hwacheon and Gapyeong are not places you reach by walking out of a subway station. Check the return bus, the last bus, and the shuttle meeting time when you arrive. On a winter day trip, leaving half an hour late in the morning can sometimes be fixed. Missing the last ride at night can mean a much higher taxi fare.

Which Korea travel eSIM fits? Start from real use and hotspot

On a winter trip to Korea, the phone is often doing navigation, ride hailing, reservation emails, contact with a day-tour driver, and photo uploads at the same time. Hwacheon and Gapyeong in particular mean looking up a bus or a meeting point, and your own mobile data is easier than hunting for public Wi-Fi the whole way. JEKO Korea eSIM plans come in different networks and data sizes, so you can match the trip. The most expensive unlimited plan is not something every traveler needs.

Mostly maps, LINE, and tickets: If the phone is mainly for maps, messages, and the occasional photo, start by comparing plans with a fixed amount of high-speed data each day. JEKO’s LG U+/SKT dual-network daily plans come in several daily amounts. Some of them drop to a lower speed after the high-speed data is used up, so read the continuation rule before you buy.

Frequent video uploads, hotspot, or several people: Look at a dual-network plan that supports hotspot, or an unlimited plan if the data need is larger. JEKO’s Korea SKT native eSIM is listed with a Korean local IP and hotspot support, which suits travelers using local apps or needing more data. The network listed on the product does not mean the same speed on the Hwacheon ice, in every valley, and indoors.

Light use, budget first: There is also an SKT single-network roaming option. Some of JEKO’s SKT single-network daily plans do not support hotspot, so if you want to share data with friends, a laptop, or a tablet, confirm before you buy that the plan you picked has hotspot open.

Compare daily amounts on the JEKO Korea daily eSIM. For heavier use, see the Korea SKT native unlimited eSIM. Before you leave, confirm the phone supports eSIM, is unlocked, and has the plan installed. After you arrive in Korea, turn on mobile data and data roaming the way the order says. If the phone will not go online, check that data is using the travel eSIM, check roaming, and then follow the product notes for the APN.

Korea winter activities FAQ

Which dates are posted for the 2027 Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival?

Korea Tourism Organization currently lists 2027/1/9 to 2027/1/31. Ticket prices, each day’s program, and whether the ice is open should follow the organizer’s latest notice before you go.

Is Hwacheon still worth it if you do not fish?

Yes. Besides ice fishing there are usually snow-and-ice activities, local snacks, and visitor areas. If sitting on the ice all day is not the plan, make fishing one part of the visit and walk the festival the rest of the time.

Does a Hwacheon ice-fishing day tour include tackle?

It depends on the tour. When you check the ticket, look separately at transfers, fishing entry, the rod, lunch, and the guide. Do not judge from the package name alone.

Does the Garden of Morning Calm light festival need snow to look good?

No. Snow with lights is atmospheric, but the main sight is the night lighting and the garden. Snow on the ground only happens if it actually snows and the weather cooperates.

Can you reach the Garden of Morning Calm on your own?

Yes. A common way is the Gyeongchun Line to around Cheongpyeong Station, then a bus or a taxi. The lights end late, so check that day’s return before you head out, and take a shuttle tour if you need one.

Do you have to buy a theme-park ticket to skate at Lotte World?

The rink has its own prices, and the official site lists admission and skate-rental packages separately. If you also want Lotte World theme park, check whether the two tickets are sold apart from each other.

Can a complete beginner skate at Lotte World?

You can start at the rail, practice basic balance, follow the rink rules, and skate slowly. With children, check the age limit and the rule about a parent coming along.

Do Korea eSIM plans support hotspot?

It depends on the plan. Some JEKO SKT native plans and some LG U+/SKT dual-network plans support hotspot, but some SKT single-network roaming daily plans do not. Follow the specs of the plan you select.

Leave a little time for winter that is not fully scheduled

Ice fishing at Hwacheon, the lights at the Garden of Morning Calm, and the rink at Lotte World are three very different ways to spend a Korean winter. You can fill a lively full day, pick one evening for a slow walk and photos, or skate for 2 hours inside Seoul.

On a first winter in Korea, there is no need to finish every activity. Pick the 2 or 3 you most want from the dates, the people you are with, and the transport, then prepare tickets, maps, and data ahead of time. The rest of the time can stay with the trip itself.

If looking up transport, opening maps, and reaching the people you are with should be easier on the road, open the JEKO Korea eSIM page before you leave, choose the days and the data size, and turn the network on after arrival the way the notes say. Then the winter trip can start.
