Scroll past a photo of an old Chinese village, a coastal glow, or a high plateau valley, and it is easy to drop the place straight into a plan. The questions start as soon as you look it up: Which month is actually the right one? How do you transfer after the high-speed rail? Do you need to stay a night? When you arrive, will the shaiqiu harvest displays, the sunset, and the morning mist in the photos still be there?
The five places are Huangling in Wuyuan, Jiangxi; Xiapu, Fujian; Shenzuo Village in Aba, Sichuan; Yangjiatang Village in Songyang, Zhejiang; and Zhaoxing Dong Village, Guizhou. Some are already mature scenic areas. Others take real effort just to reach. What they share is that they reward time spent on the view, so do not pack the days solid. Season can point you in a direction. Light, a sea of clouds, or the crop displays still depend on the day you visit.
Split them this way: for old houses in autumn, choose Huangling; for the sea, choose Xiapu; to go farther and see a plateau valley, choose Shenzuo Village; for an earthen village in sunset light, choose Yangjiatang; to take your time with drum towers and wooden houses, choose Zhaoxing Dong Village. The five are not in the same province, so do not try to rush them as a 5-day, 4-night circuit.

Comparing 5 slower trips in China: which season, and how do you get there?
| Place | What to see, and when | Suggested stay | Key independent transport | Easiest mistake |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Huangling, Jiangxi | Autumn shaiqiu displays and Huizhou-style old houses on the slope; a clear day is good for roof colors | Half a day to 1 day; photographers can stay overnight | High-speed rail to Wuyuan Station, then confirm scenic-area transport or a pickup. Enter under the current cableway and admission rules | Assuming the shaiqiu displays look the same every day all year; forgetting to reserve for National Day |
| Xiapu, Fujian | Sunrise at Beiqi, sunset at Dongbi, and tidal-flat patterns at Xiaohao | 2 days and 1 night is more comfortable | Arrive at Xiapu Station and use the Guangying No. 1 shuttle that opened in 2026, or hire a car | Skipping the tide table and walking into a working fishery; assuming the glow in photos happens every day |
| Shenzuo Village, Sichuan | A plateau valley, grassland, woodland, and a Tibetan-style village; generally the warm season into early autumn | 1–2 days, with a buffer for the drive | Reach the Aba county seat first, then follow the road to Shenzuo Village in Chali Township. A legal pre-booked car is the practical choice | Treating it as a place you reach the moment you step off a high-speed train; underestimating altitude, roads, and weather |
| Yangjiatang Village, Zhejiang | Earthen houses turning gold at sunset, and lanes through the mountain village | Half a day to 1 day; it can be paired with other old villages in Songyang | After you reach Songyang County, arrange a taxi or a hired car. Do not rely on a fixed timetable you have not verified | Entering the mountains too late and having no ride back; expecting the walls to turn gold every single evening |
| Zhaoxing Dong Village, Guizhou | Drum towers, wind-and-rain bridges, and wooden lanes; both early morning and after dark are worth staying for | 1–2 days, and staying one night is the better plan | High-speed rail to Congjiang Station, then a direct scenic-area bus or a taxi | Mixing up Congjiang Station and the Congjiang county seat; treating festival performances as a daily show |
Use the transport column to set the broad direction. When you are actually buying tickets or booking rooms, open each place’s reservation page and check that day’s departures, room rates, admission, and events one by one.
1 | Huangling in Wuyuan, Jiangxi: shaiqiu on white walls and black tiles, and how to photograph it in autumn
Best time for Huangling shaiqiu: autumn first, but the village is not only an autumn scene
Huangling is not only a patch of red leaves. It is rooftops, bamboo trays, chili, corn, chrysanthemums, and layered Huizhou-style houses. From above, black tiles and white walls cross each other, and the drying trays sit on the village like a geometric pattern. Officials held the 12th Huangling Shaiqiu Cultural Season in August 2026 (2026/8). Crop types, where the displays are placed, and the daily program can change every year, so do not copy last year’s itinerary. Huangling’s official shaiqiu cultural season
If you are going for photography, treat months 9–11 as the window for an autumn trip, then adjust for that year’s events and weather. Clear daytime light gives the drying trays more contrast. For a sense of daily life, turn the lens toward lanes, eaves, and details of the old houses. An overcast day is not a loss. The texture of old walls is often easier to keep.
How to see Huangling: a high viewpoint, the drying workshop, Tianjie, and the old houses
On a first visit, start at a high viewpoint where you are allowed to stop, so you can read the whole village and the light. Then walk Tianjie, the drying workshop, and the old buildings the scenic area has opened. Do not cross railings, climb onto a private roof, or enter a staff-controlled area for a “viral angle.” To find a quieter frame, avoid National Day and popular weekends. In September 2026 (2026/9) the scenic area announced National Day reservation limits, and in October it also announced that tickets for some dates were sold out, so Huangling is not an unknown niche spot. National Day reservation limits | Tickets for 10/2 were sold out
From Wuyuan Station to Huangling: how to confirm tickets and lodging
Set the destination as “Wuyuan Station → Huangling visitor services / cableway entrance”, then read the transport notes on the scenic-area site and the transfer service running on the day you arrive. You can also ask your lodging to arrange a pickup. If several people are traveling with heavy camera gear, agree the pickup time in advance. That is easier than hunting for a car at the station. Before you go up, ask about the last cableway and how luggage is sent.
The scenic area published its ticket-price notice on 2026-07-28. From the Huangling scenic area official website, open the current booking page and the price notice. Check whether the ticket includes the cableway, whether you need a timed reservation, and whether a night visit allows a second entry. Staying inside the scenic area, or nearby, is more convenient if you want dawn and night. When you book, also ask whether admission is included, which hours you can enter and leave, and who meets the luggage. Ticket price notice list
2 | Xiapu, Fujian: sunrise at Beiqi, sunset at Dongbi, and the tide you should check first
How to order the Xiapu photo spots: the Sansha line and Beiqi have different strengths
What draws people to Xiapu is not a typical beach-day photo. It is the lines of the tidal flats after the water drops, aquaculture poles, fishing boats, and the color of the sky playing off one another. The plan that gets stuck most often is one day that tries to cover both sunrise and sunset. Check the tide, cloud cover, and transport first. Moving between spots can use up the golden light by itself.
- Beiqi tidal flats: The main idea is the sea and the flat patterns around sunrise. Whether a handsome mudflat is exposed depends on the tide, the weather, and whether the site is open.
- Xiaohao Beach / Sansha light-and-shadow boardwalk: A safer, legal viewing platform for the coast, aquaculture work, and changes on the water. Confirm on site whether the whole wooden boardwalk is open.
- Dongbi Village: Sunset, offshore aquaculture, and fishing-village lanes. A Ningde photography route published by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism lists Huazhu sunrise, Dongbi sunset, and the Sansha light-and-shadow boardwalk as separate shooting points. Ministry of Culture and Tourism photography route
- Huazhu Village: Save it for sunrise by the sea the next morning, and it can share a lodging base with Dongbi. Whether you see the sunrise still depends on that day’s clouds.
New transport in 2026: from the high-speed station to Sansha, look up Guangying No. 1
A useful change for independent travelers is a 2026 report carried by Fujian’s transport authority: in February 2026 (2026/2), Xiapu opened the Guangying No. 1 tourist shuttle from Xiapu Station to the Sansha scenic area. It runs through Longtou, Xiaohao, the light-and-shadow boardwalk, Dongbi, and other stops, and it is meant to meet high-speed rail passengers. That is closer to current information than older guides that say you must hire a car the moment you leave the train. Fujian Provincial Department of Transportation
Even so, a shuttle does not mean the timetable will meet a pre-dawn sunrise or a ride back at night. Once the rail ticket is booked, check the latest official notice or station information and match the boarding point, fare, departures, and last bus. For a pre-dawn sunrise at Beiqi, night photography, or moving with a tripod, stay the night before in Xiapu county town or in Sansha, and agree a legal pickup in advance.
How not to waste a Xiapu shoot: tides, wind, waves, and the safe edge
Blue hour is the short window when the sky turns blue before sunrise or after sunset. It is not a fixed clock time every day. Look up local sunrise and sunset first, then leave a buffer to move and find a position. If you meet rain, sea fog, or strong wind, switch to the village or an indoor subject. Do not force your way onto the shore.
The tidal flats are not an empty sandbar for visitors to walk across. Mud that looks flat can be soft, pooled with water, or cut off by the rising tide. It is also where people farm laver, kelp, and fish rafts. Shoot from legal public roads and viewing platforms. Do not enter aquaculture areas, and do not use fishing boats or bamboo frames as props without permission. Check the local tide and sea forecast from the Fujian Marine Forecast and the National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center. Do not estimate Xiapu’s times from a Taiwan port tide table.
A 2-day, 1-night outline for Xiapu
Day 1: Arrive at Xiapu Station, leave your bags or confirm transport, see Xiaohao and the light-and-shadow boardwalk, watch sunset at Dongbi, and sleep in Sansha or the county town. Day 2: Choose Huazhu or Beiqi for sunrise according to weather and transport, return to the lodging for breakfast, walk a nearby village if time remains, then go back to Xiapu Station. This leaves some room to breathe. On the day, decide which spot deserves longer according to weather, tide, and road conditions.
3 | Shenzuo Village in Aba, Sichuan: a beautiful plateau valley, and the hardest transport of the five
Where is Shenzuo Village? The point is a Tibetan-style village and a river valley
Shenzuo Village is in Chali Township, Aba County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan, in the core of the Shenzuo 4A scenic area. A 2024 local report carried by the Aba prefecture government says the drive from the Aba county seat takes about 1 hour. The Requ River runs through the valley, and forest, grassland, and the village set one another off. Use that as a working idea when you plan a 2026 drive, then leave room for that day’s road conditions and stops. Aba Prefecture government report
Shenzuo suits people who want plateau daily life, a village, a valley, and morning light. Prefer the milder warm season through early autumn, and choose the date from local weather, road conditions, and whether lodging is open. Winter can bring snow and ice. Do not treat “winter is always more magical” as a reason you must go.
How do you get to Shenzuo, and why a driver who knows the road?
First reach the Aba county seat, then book a legal local car, or have your lodging explain the transport clearly. Shenzuo Village is not a place you reach by stepping off a high-speed train in Chengdu or at Jiuzhaigou. Reports mention expressways improving outside access, but a project still being planned is not the same as a road that is open the whole way today. On the day you leave, open the Aba Prefecture government website and the weather forecast. If there is any concern about a closure, ice, or rockfall, change the plan first.
The altitude here affects more than photographs. It affects how your body adjusts. After you arrive, cut back on hard running and alcohol, stay warm, and drink water. If you get a clear headache, nausea, or breathlessness that is not normal, stop going higher and get medical help quickly, and descend if you need to. Do not treat a data plan bought online as mountain emergency rescue.
What should you ask a guesthouse?
When you book a guesthouse in Shenzuo, ask four things directly: “Can the road reach the door that day?” “Is there heating, hot water, and steady power?” “How is the pickup from the Aba county seat charged?” “How do dinner and the ride back after checkout work?” Meals, cars, and payment in a remote area will not match a big-city habit. Save the lodging location and the driver’s contact offline as well.
4 | Yangjiatang in Songyang, Zhejiang: an old village the sunset turns gold, best photographed slowly
Best time to photograph Yangjiatang: warm light in the evening, but not a gold wall every day
Yangjiatang Village in Songyang, Zhejiang, is called the “Golden Potala” because its earthen houses step up the hill and catch the sunset. What is worth photographing is light climbing the walls, a corner in a narrow lane, and ordinary details of village life, not one frame from a single viral spot before you leave. Lishui local media
Start watching about 1–2 hours before evening. Clouds during the day, the slope’s aspect, and the season all change how far the gold reaches. Find a legal public viewpoint first. Do not enter a private house or courtyard, or climb onto a roof, without asking. Autumn is a comfortable time to walk the old village. Spring and misty rain are a different layer. You do not have to wait for one “golden minute.”
How to arrange transport, and why pairing it with other Songyang villages is the better use of time
Yangjiatang is in the Sandu Township, Songyang County area. The practical route is to reach Songyang county town first, then arrange a suitable ride up. If the group includes an older person, a child, or large bags, agree the hired car’s waiting time, one-way or round trip, parking spot, and cancellation terms in advance. That is more reliable than calling a car on the spot. Village roads can be narrow, and the ride back after sunset needs a buffer before full dark.
If you have time, pair Yangjiatang with one or two other old villages in Songyang. You do not need to rush just to collect places. A 2026 Tide News report said Sandu and Sidu townships in Songyang drew about 89,000 visits over the Spring Festival, and Yangjiatang, Songzhuang, and Pingtian were crowded, with rooms hard to find. “Hidden” does not mean you can skip booking a room. Before you enter, check that day’s roads and whether any section is under work. Tide News | crowds in Songyang’s old villages
5 | Zhaoxing Dong Village, Guizhou: a transfer from Congjiang high-speed rail gets you there, and one night beats a rushed photo stop
What to see in Zhaoxing: drum towers, wind-and-rain bridges, and wooden streets
Unlike the earlier places, which turn on landform or sunset, Zhaoxing is for slowly reading Dong settlement space, drum towers, wooden buildings, and daily life in the village. By day, walk the public lanes and the area around the drum towers. After dark, watch the wooden houses in the lights. Early morning is better for quieter streets. Ask before you photograph residents, religious practice, or traditional events. Do not treat clothing or a doorway as a free studio.
Congjiang Station to Zhaoxing Dong Village: do not get off at the wrong stop
A 2024 scenic-area transport note from the Guizhou local government is clear: take the high-speed rail to “Congjiang Station”. The coach area beside the station has a direct bus to Zhaoxing Dong Village. The reference ride at that time was about 10 minutes, and a late arrival can consider a taxi. When you travel, open the page and check the fare, the waiting point, whether you need a reservation, and the current running times. Do not read a ride of about 10 minutes as a bus every 10 minutes. Congjiang Station transfer notes
If you stay in a guesthouse inside the village, confirm the ticket entrance, the shuttle, whether luggage can be picked up, and whether walking is restricted at night. Official events, the Dong New Year, and performances do not happen on a fixed schedule every day. If you want a festival, check that year’s organizer notice, the dates, and whether a ticket is required. If photography is the point, stay at least one night so you can catch both early morning and after dark, and so a delayed train does not compress the whole day.
High-speed rail or a hired car? These five do not belong in one short trip
Planning these five places from Taiwan, the easy mistake is to see them all on a map of China and try to photograph all five in five days. They sit in Jiangxi, Fujian, Sichuan, Zhejiang, and Guizhou. Cross-province driving and transfer time can easily run longer than the time you spend at the places themselves.
The more realistic approach is to pick one region per trip. For example: 2–3 days at Huangling in Wuyuan, Jiangxi, for a first old-village shoot; 2–3 days in Xiapu, Fujian, with sunrise and sunset first; 2–3 days in Songyang, Zhejiang, linking a few old villages; 2–3 days in Zhaoxing, Guizhou, sleeping in the village; and for Shenzuo in Sichuan, extra buffer for the ride in and out of Aba and for adjusting to the plateau. Add or drop days according to your trains, your energy, and the frames you want.
When you ask for a hired-car quote, send the driver one clear note: “date, start and drop-off points, number of people and bags, planned stops, whether the driver waits, whether highway tolls and parking are included, and the policy for cancellation or a rain delay.” Do not only ask “how much to Shenzuo” or “how much for one day in Xiapu.” Otherwise two quotes may not be for the same service.
Guesthouses in old villages and morning mist: seven things to confirm before you go
- Is the guesthouse actually inside the scenic area? Some listings say “near such-and-such scenic area,” and you still need a ride or a walk to the photo spot.
- Can you leave at dawn to shoot and return to the room at night? Scenic-area opening hours and guest access may use different routes.
- Heating, air conditioning, hot water, and a private bathroom: A plateau and a coast do not need the same things.
- Do not only ask whether there is signal and Wi-Fi: Ask whether it holds inside the room, and what happens in a power cut, especially on a plateau or in a mountain village.
- Confirm sunrise, sunset, tides, wind, rain, and road conditions for the shoot day: In Xiapu, tide and sea state matter most. At Yangjiatang, watch the sunset. At Shenzuo, check the road first.
- After you book, ask the host for a formal address, a pin, and a contact: Save screenshots. Do not leave the details only in an online chat.
- Respect residents and people at work: Without permission, do not shoot into bedrooms, courtyards, drying yards, or aquaculture sites.
How to prepare a connection for a slower China trip: an eSIM is a tool, not a signal guarantee
Looking up a transfer at a high-speed station, sending a pin to a driver, opening a scenic-area QR code, checking the tide, and translating all need a connection. If you are heading for a plateau area such as Shenzuo, or leaving before dawn in Xiapu, save screenshots of the route, the driver’s number, the lodging address, and the tickets before you leave the lodging Wi-Fi.
JEKO currently lists a mainland China daily eSIM and a mainland China total-data eSIM, among other plans. Choose by trip length and how much data you use. What matters is identifying the actual plan. The China Mobile and China Unicom products checked for this article are roaming eSIMs that connect through a local partner network in China. Some plans use a Hong Kong or Singapore IP, so a “native China IP” and “no VPN” are not the same thing. On the product page, read that plan’s route, platform limits, and supported apps. China eSIM and app availability
| Travel connection | How to choose | Practical backup |
|---|---|---|
| Maps, messages, and tickets every day | A low or medium daily or total-data plan is worth comparing | Offline maps plus screenshots of tickets |
| Long uploads of photos, video, and Reels | Estimate daily high-speed use and what it feels like after the speed drops | Upload large files on hotel Wi-Fi, and keep a copy on the device |
| A specific international app | Check whether the plan you selected lists support, IP or route, and limits | Do not make one app your only way to reach people |
| Plateau, valley, tunnel, and the edge of a coast | Check the supported carrier and the coverage area first. The live signal can still be uneven | Agree a meeting point early, carry a power bank, and download offline files |
One reminder: a single eSIM may not switch automatically between China Mobile and China Unicom. Which carrier you can join depends on the actual product. An eSIM is a mobile network, not a satellite rescue device. A phone that does not support eSIM, an install that was never finished, an APN that does not match, or a valley with no tower can all leave you offline. Before you go, confirm phone compatibility, the install steps, and data-roaming settings. Choose a plan for the data amount you will actually use. Not everyone needs unlimited data.
Common questions FAQ
Can you see Huangling’s shaiqiu all year?
Not necessarily. The scenic area holds shaiqiu-themed events, but crops, displays, and session times change. Read that year’s event page before you buy a ticket.
Is Huangling a day trip or a one-night stay?
A day is enough for the old village and the shaiqiu displays; stay one night if you want morning and night light. When you book, ask whether the lodging includes scenic-area admission.
Do you have to hire a car in Xiapu?
You do not necessarily need a hired car. In 2026 there is already a Guangying No. 1 shuttle linking Xiapu Station with the Sansha line. Pre-dawn sunrise and a late ride back may still not match the timetable, so check departures before you decide whether to book a legal pickup.
Can Beiqi and Dongbi in Xiapu be photographed on the same day?
You can plan it that way. “Beiqi in the early morning plus Dongbi in the evening” needs time in between for transport and rest, then adjust for weather, tide, and energy.
Can you walk onto the Xiapu tidal flats to shoot?
Walking straight in is not recommended. Some areas are working fisheries. Tide and soft mud are both risks. Stay on legal public paths and viewing platforms, and follow the fences and warnings on site.
Is Shenzuo Village high, and can you go without plateau experience?
You can go, but leave time to adjust. Aba County is a plateau environment, and people respond differently. Avoid hard exercise. If you suspect altitude illness, get medical help first, and drop elevation if the situation calls for it.
Can you see Yangjiatang’s “Golden Potala” every day?
You can see the village. The golden light is not guaranteed. Weather, cloud, and the sun’s direction all change the walls. Arriving earlier in the evening gives you time to find a position and wait for the light.
Are Congjiang Station and the Congjiang county seat the same place?
They are not the same place. For Zhaoxing Dong Village, first confirm the ticket says “Congjiang Station,” then transfer using the scenic-area transport notes. Do not guess the station from the county name alone.
Can you go to Zhaoxing Dong Village and back from the high-speed station on the same day?
A same-day return is possible, but one night is more relaxed. If you want dawn and night photos, or you do not want a delayed train to compress the day, check the direct-bus times and admission information before you book a room.
If a China eSIM has an overseas IP, can you definitely use ChatGPT and TikTok?
Not necessarily. The route of a specific plan, platform policy, device settings, and network conditions all matter. Read the supported apps one by one when you buy. Do not read “overseas IP” or “no VPN” as every app working 100% of the time.
Can all five places be done in 5 days and 4 nights?
Not recommended. They are spread across five provinces. Long cross-province moves eat the time you wanted for photographs and rest. Choosing 1–2 places in the same area feels more like a trip.
